Hearty congratulations to Alex Feakes, selected to fight the new seat of Lewisham West and Penge.
Unusually, Dorset-based Lib Dem blogger Justine McGuiness has raised questions about the selection process on her blog.

Yes, very hearty congratulations to Alex who I succeeded as LDYS treasurer many years ago.
Justine’s comments are quite unedifying and I hope she will remove them.
Who gets to vote is selections is clearly stipulated in the Selection Rules set by the English Council, which meets again in July.
The rules made by the English Party provide there are two options as to who can vote in a multi constituency local party – all members of the local party or just the members in the relevant constituency. Which applies in any constituency is determined by the local party in its own constitution
But Jonathan’s comment doesn’t answer it. They are both in the same local party, which has one constitution. Seems the problem stems from the fact that one constituency in the local party started the process before boundary changes, LW&P afterwards.
I agree with Justine – not particularly cos’ I know much about Lewisham – but because I know about London Region’s ‘favoured sons’ policy.
Let’s be clear about this – London Region Liberal Democrats are in favour of bureaucracy rather than campaigns. They choose their unelectable mates sitting in their Kensington piles – why? Because the electable Lib Dems are too busy campaigning. It’s only now that we realise that Sean Hooker, Margaret Joachim and Brian Orrell run an incompetent circus that allow usless idiots like Doocey and Pope to get anywhere near the list.
If we brought back first past the post for GLA elections then these fuckwits wouldn’t get over the starting blocks…
I find it interesting that a rather mild reference to selections has resulted in so many comments & e-mails. Far from my comments being ‘unedifying’, I think I raised a valid question about the fairness of who has a vote in selections.
It isn’t personal – it’s not an issue about Alex (who I regard as a friend, have discussed this with and WILL BE a good candidate) nor is it about any other candidate.
Those who are interested might like to look at my second blog on the subject. http://justinemcguinness.blogspot.com/2007/04/selections.html
