Well, we know that Lib Dems in the north east are doing well at the moment. They’ve had some strong results in Newcastle and last night, to the surprise of many, they gave Labour a run for their money with a 21.4% increase in the vote.
Blakelaw (Newcastle upon Tyne) result:
LAB: 44.9% (-25.7)
LDEM: 39.4% (+21.4)
NFIR: 8.2% (+8.2)
CON: 7.4% (-4.0)— Britain Elects (@britainelects) November 24, 2016
There was a solid hold in the Valley ward in Tandridge, too, with a 16% rise.
Valley (Tandridge) result:
LDEM: 51.6% (+16.6)
CON: 25.0% (-8.8)
UKIP: 16.8% (-0.4)
LAB: 6.6% (-7.3)— Britain Elects (@britainelects) November 24, 2016
In South Somerset, Turn Hill saw a lively Liberal Democrat campaign which saw Julia Gadd’s share of the vote rise from 34% to 40%. The Conservatives got 454 votes, the Lib Dems 352 and Labour a mere 74.
Elsewhere there was a 1% rise in the Lib Dem vote in Carlisle
Castle (Carlisle) result:
LAB: 49.3% (+9.0)
CON: 27.3% (-1.4)
UKIP: 11.1% (-3.6)
LDEM: 7.2% (+1.0)
GRN: 5.1% (-3.2)— Britain Elects (@britainelects) November 24, 2016
We stood in a ward in Pendle which the Tories gained from Labour, the only seat to change hands last night. We hadn’t stood the last time and managed to gain 2.3%.
Reedley (Pendle) result:
CON: 51.1% (+8.4)
LAB: 46.6% (-7.6)
LDEM: 2.3% (+2.3)— Britain Elects (@britainelects) November 24, 2016
And there was a small increase in the vote for us in a solid Tory ward in Eastbourne.
Sovereign (Eastbourne) result:
CON: 65.2% (+24.4)
LDEM: 27.0% (+1.6)
LAB: 7.8% (+0.0)
UKIP and Grn did not stand.— Britain Elects (@britainelects) November 24, 2016

Some great results there; well done, everyone. As one of the admins of the Lib Dem Newbies UK group over on Facebook, I can say that Dorinda Cooper, elected in Tandridge overnight, is the second post-Referendum newbie elected to a principal council, after Dilys Neill in Stowe (Cotswold DC).
If anyone else is aware of any post-Referendum new members elected, we’d love to know!
As a LIBDEM newby and French LIBDEM National Coordinator we are heartened by these results. Although many of us cannot vote at the moment there is enormous support for the LIBDEMS in the wider EU. We are united in wanting BREXIT to have a positive outcome. Remember “BREXIT really means REMAIN”!
IN 2007 Lib Dems won all three seats in the “solidly Tory” ward in Eastbourne
Blakelaw, was there not a by election there 2 or so months ago, we built up from 8 -28%, now a few weeks later more growth in the actual vote as well as percentage. If I recall we used to hold the ward till the Coalition came along with just over 50%, so we have quickly got back not far off that figure. Hope they can win it back in May. Well done to all concerned.
Theakes is correct regarding Blakelaw (Newcastle). Ciaran Morrissey was the Lib Dem candidate both last night and September 2016. He increased his vote from 654 (Sept) to 784 votes last night. In May the Lib Dem vote was 267 and prior to that 428 / 485. Labour’s vote was 1,846 (May), 1,004 (Sept) and 892 (last night). UKIP didn’t stand last night but polled 443 in Sept, the Lib Dems beat them in May. Mr Morrissey is a politics student at Newcastle University and seems a real find having taken to heart Tim Farron’s advice; ‘pick a ward, any ward and win it.’
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Tadley South
Counting was today.
Con 456 49% (-14%)
Lib Dem 342 37% (+17%)
Labour 88 9.5% (-7%)
UKIP 41 4.5% (+4.5%)
t/o 20.33%
The Lib Dem result in Tadley South, Basingstoke & Deane, was exceptionally strong.
The percentage of the votes for the past five elections in that ward (2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2016 by-election) have been:
Conservative 59.2, 61.7, 61.3, 63.0, 49.2
Labour 16.7, 17.5, 15.6, 16.5, 9.5
Liberal Democrat 16.4, 20.8, 23.1, 20.5, 36.9
UKIP 7.7, 0, 0, 0, 4.4
So almost a doubling of the Lib Dem vote.
Joe Crome was the first post-referendum newbie LD – a mere 7 days after the referendum. He’s already become an excellent councillor for Leatherhead North (Mole Valley)
Surely Joe Crome couldn’t have joined the party after 23rd June if the election was on 30th June? He must have been nominated before the referendum!
