Readers of today’s Observer story by Toby Helm regarding Lib Dem ministers contributing 10% of their salaries to the party may have thought it had a familiar ring to it. That’d be because it was first reported back in December, as we blogged back then. Ah well, nothing like old news 🙂

The party’s budget shows a full year income from ministerial tithes of £40k for 2011, yet the forecast for 2010 is only £6,500 income. Surely as this is roughly a half year that forecast should by £20,000?
There are some very wealthy MPs in the cabinet and I am sure some of them could pay double the amount they are being asked for and not notice the difference.
Party funding should have been included in the Coalition agreement.
Given where we are today then those responsible for the party finances should be careful not to be bought off by the financial services industry who want to stop us from regulating them.
Well, if the Observer can ‘get away with old news’, perhaps it’s an indication that not enough effective publicity was given to the story by our Cowley Street Press Office when it first made the announcement .
So we should be grateful that one newspaper has decided to pick it up and run with it : we need all the favourable exposure we can get . Perhaps if we were nice to the press , we might get better results. What’s that old saw about honey and vinegar?
