On 11th June there is a Council by-election in Wallington South ward in my constituency. It has been caused by the sad death of a friend of mine Colin Hall, who played a major role in many Sutton success stories such as the Smarter Travel Sutton scheme. You can read some of the tributes to Colin here.
Our candidate, Stephen Cook, if elected will be an excellent Councillor. He has lived locally for 35 years. He is Chairman of the local residents’ association, has had involvement in a number of important campaigns such as the campaign to block a McDonalds drive-thru’ and has strong business experience.
The Tories, still smarting from their failure to dislodge London’s last Lib Dem MP, are running a relentlessly negative campaign (whilst claiming to be running a positive one).
This by-election provides one of the first opportunities since May 7th to defy the other parties and show them the Liberal Democrats aren’t going to fade away.
With a Conservative Government committed to clearing the deficit by demanding more sacrifices from the working poor and nothing more from the very rich and rolling back our civil liberties, the Liberal Democrats’ commitment to safeguarding a fair, free and open society has never been more necessary or urgent.
This is the type of society that the Liberal Democrats are fostering or supporting in Sutton. Sutton continues to invest in its voluntary sector, is giving power to local people through initiatives like the Hackbridge Neighbourhood development group and has consulted widely on its budget to ensure maximum support for the tough financial decisions it has had to take.
Now that we can no longer deliver part of our vision in national Government, help us continue to implement that vision locally.
Where better to drive forward the Lib Dem fightback than Sutton?

* Tom Brake was the Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington from 1997 to 2019.

When it comes to the #LibDemFightback I am afraid, as a supporter, I have one foot out of the door. Thought Creagh did better than Lamb tonight and also think Liz Kendall and Yvette Cooper have better policies than Farron and Lamb.
Not sure what I would do if Burnham won. But anything other than a Burnham victory will be bad for the Lib Dems. Or Corbyn, of course.
Yes, I met Steve at an action day a few weeks ago and he’ll be a great councillor. I will be joining you again on Thursday.
I hope many of you will reciprocate and join us for our double by-election down the road in Dorking a week later onThursday 18 June. We have an action day on Saturday 13 June and deliveries or canvassing most evenings:

PS For Eddie’s benefit, there is no Labour candidate in our by-election. Mole Valley is a Labour-free zone.
On QT, Creagh may have come across better than Norman Lamb, but she came across to me as cold, cynical and calculating, whereas Norman came across as passionate and sincere. His problem was getting heard.
As for Yvette Cooper, I didn’t know she had any policies.
Hi Paul. I know Lamb is sincere and I do wonder where Labour’s new found love of defence spending has come from, but there have been a few good policies announced, but what I meant was the total package is what I am preferring from Labour at the moment.
They’ve still got problems. But one can’t help where his heart is getting tugged towards.
Best regards
