Top of the Blogs: The Golden Dozen #101

Welcome to the 101st of our weekly round-ups from the Lib Dem blogosphere, featuring the seven most popular stories according to click-throughs from the Aggregator (18th-24th January 2009), together with a hand-picked quintet, mostly courtesy of LibDig, you might otherwise have missed.

As ever, let’s start with the most popular post, and work our way down.

1. My cat and Rene Kinzett on Peter Black AM’s blog.
Decisions are made by those who show up.

2. BNP Win in Bexley Thwarted by Recount
on Jonathan Fryer’s blog.
Cheering a Tory victory (with due commiserations to Lib Dem candidate Grace Goodlad).

3. When Lib Dems go to war on Peter Black AM’s blog.
Of course it was a win-win when Liverpool played Everton in that Lib Dem-controlled council.

4. Germany moves Liberal on James Oates’s Cicero’s Songs blog.
“The FDP’s future as a small party is endangered,” as one of its leading lights put it – by embracing liberal ideas like lower taxes, less bureaucracy and personal responsibility. Sounds like a plan.

5. It’s Liberal Democrats 33, Labour 24, or so says someone at the Council on Neil Williams’ blog.
The likely scores on the Haringey doors, according to Labour (who obviously wouldn’t be using taxpayer-funded council resources on party business).

6. Nick Clegg still in a tangle over tax on Geoffrey Payne’s Left Liberal blog.
Is the party leadership actually prepared to take the ‘tough choices’ needed to switch £20bn of current public spending to Lib Dem priorities.

7. Labour’s Islington South majority cut by voters, not boundary changes on Bridget Fox’s blog.
“With just a 0.8% swing to the Lib Dems needed next time, Islington voters really are in a position to deliver the change we need.”

And now to the five blog-posts that come highly recommended regardless of the number of Aggregator click-throughs they attracted. As is now traditional we’re using the LibDig widget to select some of the posts from the seven days in question which you’ve most ‘dug’. But, remember, if you want to highlight a Lib Dem blog article published in the past seven days – your own, or someone else’s – using the steam-powered method of e-mail all you have to do is drop me a line at [email protected] (providing the web-link and author, and any tagline comment you care to have published).

8. Kawczynski is a disgrace on James Graham’s Quaequam Blog!
“James Graham cynically suggests certain Tories used the Damian Green affair as a stick with which to beat Labour, and don’t really ‘get’ civil liberties. Alternatively: Daniel Kawczynski makes Speaker look good shocker!” (Submitted by nedward via LibDig).

9. Tony Benn takes on BBC for refusing to screen DEC Gaza Appeal on Caron’s Musings blog.
“Tony Benn spendng more of his time with politics supporting the notable charities offering humanitarian aid to Gaza and attacking the BBC’s decision not to air their appeal.” (Submitted by Stephen Glenn via LibDig).

10. Did UK Government try to block release of AMs’ expenses? on the Welsh Lib Dems Freedom Central blog.
“Harriet Harman tries to get AMs behind the Government’s secrecy drive.” (Submitted by willhowells via LibDig).

11. Impartiality or BBC Ineptitude on Stephen Glenn’s Linlithgow Journal blog.
“Stephen removes BBC from his feeds.” (Submitted by Caron via LibDig).

12. YouTube campaigning bar set in South West Devon
on Rob Fenwick’s A Posh-Sounding Northumbrian blog.
“Tips on how to do YouTube campaigning right.” (Submitted by markpack via LibDig).

That’s it for this week. Happy blogging!
