Welcome to my day: 2 April 2018 – back in the USSR?

Do you know, I’d almost forgotten that I was today’s duty Editor. That’s what a four day weekend does for you. Well, that and the fact that today’s Liberal Democrat Voice is brought to you from Chisinau, the capital of Moldova!

I’m here in part to explore a little known corner of what some describe as New Europe, and also to meet some Moldovan liberals, which should be interesting given the local politics here.

So, moving on, what have we got for you today?

First up is Gordon Lishman, who offers us a report of Vince Cable’s views on internet regulation. In the light of Mark Zuckerburg’s scepticism (well, he would say that, wouldn’t he?), the challenge of balancing individual freedom with the ability of states and individuals to protect themselves is a daunting one.

Next, Oliver Craven writes on child poverty. He hopes to bring a motion on the subject to Federal Conference, and if freeing people from poverty isn’t a good Liberal cause, I’m not sure what is.

It’s Easter Monday, of course, and Judy Abel is evidently thinking about how to resurrect our poll ratings. It’s a rather longer piece than we might normally publish, but I hope that it might encourage some of you to write for us, fleshing out, or even offering alternatives.

I’m off now in search of a country that doesn’t exist, and where frozen isn’t obviously related to Disney. If I get back, I’ll let you have some thoughts to close the day.

So, let today begin!

* Mark Valladares is the Monday Editor of Liberal Democrat Voice.
