Would President Obama call Paddy Ashdown to serve?

As Obama heads towards the election in a fortnight’s time, some commentators are turning to discussion of what his cabinet would look like. The Spectator’s Daniel Korski has posted his predictions/suggestions, including…

Bill Richardson (Secretary of State)
Chuck Hagel (Secretary of Defence)
Paul Krugman (Chairman, Council of Economic Advisers)
Richard Holbrooke (Director of National Intelligence)
General Colin Powell (Secretary of Education)
Max Cleland (Secretary of Veterans Affairs)
Arnold Schwarzenegger (Secretary of Environment and Energy, a new position)

He also tips Greg Craig as Chief of Staff and General David Petraeus as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. And Hilary, of course, as a supreme court appointment.

Most notably for Lib Dems, he suggests that Paddy Ashdown would be Obama’s nominee for NATO Secretary-General.

What do you think of Korski’s ideas, and who would you want to see Obama appoint?

There are rumours that both Oprah Winfrey and (more credibly) Caroline Kennedy could be in the running for his Ambassador to Britain.

Post your suggestions in the comments — but one thing’s for certain: this is a parlour game Obama’s campaign will be trying to publicly evade. The Democrats know that defeat can often be clutched from the jaws of victory. While Obama’s poll leads look solid, he’ll want to make sure his supporters are eager, rather than complacent, come election day. His trip to see his sick grandmother in Hawaii is the right thing to do because it’s the right thing to do – not because he can take a win for granted yet.

Some silly suggestions IMO. I don’t think it’s a secret that Ashdown coveted the Nato job in the past but what personal links are there to suggest Obama would appoint him?

Powell also seems unlikely both for that role and given his age – though I wouldn’t be surprised to see him appointed to non-cabinet role.

Clinton for the Supreme Court would seem silly – she’s no judicial experience and there would be the mother of all fights getting Republicans to approve her. (not to mention the technical point that there isn’t a vacancy!)

I think Gore will go to the UN, Hillary will be appointed Attorney General or to Health, Warren Buffett would be appointed to the Treasury, Chuck Hagel to Defence and he’ll appoint some Republicans somewhere, but I’m not sure where.
