Dan Snow presents a demonstration of how AV is “a common-sense solution to find out the result that the majority are happy with”, illustrated by a bunch of friends deciding where to go for a night out. It’s a new version of Dan’s previous – and very successful – video along the same lines, highlighting the point that First Past the Post is suited to binary choices, and doesn’t work for multiple choices:
As long as there are only two choices – the coffee shop and the pub – the old voting system works fine. But the trouble starts when there are more than two choices.
Take it away, Dan:

About time too. I’ve been despairing of our ability to get over the message of why AV is better than FPTP. Dan’s first video (and the leaflet I’ve seen based on it) actually gets the message over.
Much much better than the first very poor effort
This was a ridiculous explanation – There were still only 2 choices Pub or Coffee. Surely Pub, Pictures, Bowling or coffee would be more sensible.
But then AV just ISN’T SENSIBLE I want THE PERSON I vote for NOT ANYONE ELSE and would NEVER give a second choice I don’t have one.
That wasn’t embarrassing or patronising at all was it ….
“But then AV just ISN’T SENSIBLE I want THE PERSON I vote for NOT ANYONE ELSE and would NEVER give a second choice I don’t have one.”
So your suggesting Dan should have included the person that goes home disgruntled at not getting his own way!
He could well have done but it’s hardly relevant to a discussion of democracy.
Jason Shouler,
Well put.
Everyone has a second and third preference, even if they are too ideologically pure to be prepared to admit it on the ballot paper.
