Welcome to the weekend edition of our LDV feature, rounding up some of the best/worst/most curious political videos doing the rounds. What could be more approrpiate today than to take the theme of by-elections?
First up, let’s cast our minds back some 47 years: to Orpington, scene of perhaps the most famous Liberal by-election victory of all, when Eric Lubbock was elected the Liberal party’s sixth MP:
And now a slight change of tack – BBC2’s Mock The Week’s take on ‘Bad Things For a By-Election Candidate to Say’:
And finally for today, why not end on an upbeat note, with a more recent famous by-election victory for the Lib Dems – yes, 16 years ago, almost to the day, Diana Maddock scored a quite stunning victory over the Tories in Christchurch. Enjoy:

47 years, surely?
It was 47 years. I was there!
Quite right, now corrected. My math went wonky.
More wonky maths:
The Liberal Party had six MPs before Orpington, so Lubbock became the seventh not sixth.
After the 1987 Truro by-election, Weekending on Radio 4 did a great sketch with a Returning Officer announcing the results, but instead of reading numbers of votes, he reads the comments that the parties made in response to them, but in the usual Returning Officer’s declamatory style…”Aubyn, Nick (Conservative) – ‘A good result despite our not gaining the seat’…Oh well, maybe you had to be there!
