ALDC by-election report, 22nd January

This week, there were seven principal council by-elections, of which five were in England, one was in Wales, whilst another was in Scotland. There were two Tuesday by-elections and a further five on Thursday.

We start our deep dive into the results Cotswold DC, where the Green Party were defending the ward of The Rissingtons, and we won a stupendous victory. Congratulations to Cllr Craig Thurling and the local team on an amazing result. We had not even stood in this seat in the previous election but from nowhere we took 37.5% of the vote on a massive 43% turnout. The Green Party collapsed and fell to last place!

In Scotland, the SNP comfortably held Glenrothes West and Kinglassie ward on Fife Council, with Reform distant in second place on first preferences. Thank you to Ed Scotcher and the local team for flying the Liberal Democrat flag.

In Wales, Reform gained Leeswood ward on Flintshire CC from Labour, who slumped to fourth amid split opposition from various independent candidates. Thank you to Richard Sefton and the local team for flying the Liberal Democrat flag. We had not stood here last time so getting 10% of the vote is a great step in the right direction.

On South Norfolk DC, the Conservatives successfully defended Central Wymondham ward. But massive well done to Lib Dem candidate Stephen Witt for not just ensuring a Lib Dem choice on the ballot, but picking up 12% in a ward we had not stood in last time and coming in ahead of Labour.

Whilst Reform gained this district seat off Labour, the Greens were able to comfortably gain the county division off Reform. Thank you to Adrian Miller, Gemma Davey and the local teams for flying the Liberal Democrat flag.

  • See the Flintshire vote – you can now become a councillor with just 160 votes and less than a quarter of the votes cast.

  • LibDems won Truro North in Cornwall last year with only 19pc. With 5+ parties we are going to see loads more of these tight results.

  • Looking sideways at The Polls, Reform peaked at the end of September & have been falling since at a rate just over 1% a Month, currently they are around 28.5%.

The most striking aspect of these 7 Elections to me was that in 6 of them We either stood where we didn’t before or increased our Vote share.

Richard – not just a councillor but one on a Unitary Authority.

Here is my usual month-end summary of the last fifty local by-elections. Contrary to some of the above comments I see little sign of a Reform decline.

    Percentage Vote Share:
    Reform UK 28.43%, Conservatives 19.43%, Liberal Democrats 16.35%, Greens 14.02%, Labour 10.86%, Others 10.91%.
Labour are at their lowest percentage level ever. Will they soon go below 10%?
Greens are at their highest percentage ever (previous high point was in July 2021).

    Gains and losses are:
Reform: Net gain of seventeen: 18 gains, 2 held, 1 lost
Others: Net gain of one: 1 gain, 3 held, 0 lost
Lib Dems: No change: 4 gains, 7 held, 4 lost
Greens: No change: 3 gains, 1 held, 3 lost
Independents: No change: 3 gains, 0 held, 3 lost
Conservatives: Net loss of seven: 2 gains, 4 held, 9 lost
Labour: Net loss of eleven: 0 gains, 2 held, 11 lost

The last Labour gain was on 21st November 2024.

    Seats Won:
    Reform 20, Liberal Democrats 11, Conservatives 6, Greens 4, Independents 3, Labour 2, Others 4

The above data is for the most recent 50 by-elections in England & Wales (30th October 2025 to 22nd January 2026). Parish/Town councils are not included.

The Reform Party have strong Conservative links.
    Of the Reform Party MPs.
    4 are former Tory MPs.
1 is a former Tory councillor.
The leader is a former Tory member.
While the former leader is a former Tory donor.

It does seem the Reform Party is made up of Conservatives.
