So Wales did not get beyond the semi finals in Euro 2016. Or rather; Wales got through to the semi finals of Euro 2016. An awesome performance which highlighted real teamwork and courage. They had tenacity in the face of people expecting so little of them. They believed in themselves and gave it everything. They stood out as a team who felt privileged to be in the contest, wanted to make their mark and will come home to Wales with their heads held high having made it to the semi finals. Llongyfarchiadau Cymru/Congratulations Wales.
I am so proud to be Welsh. But also proud to be part of the United Kingdom and proud to be part of Europe. As Liberal Democrats, our message of working together as a team, of courage when people expect so little of us and a belief in ourselves and our values must continue through. As it did for the Welsh Football Team. Diolch yn fawr.

Opening yesterday’s speech on Global Migration -My Lords, I had thought we might sing the Welsh national anthem at the start of my speech to congratulate the Welsh football team for doing so magnificently. (Didn’t sing, although a week ago 32 Chapel members from Rhydyfoel area sang “Hen Wlad fy nhadau” in Central lobby !)
I must confess to only being one quarter Welsh.
I thought the team did very well until the Portugal match when they suddenly started to play a lot like England. 🙁 Funnily-enough, the only other time I thought they were doing this was when they lost to England.
Like Tony I am only 25% Welsh. But that increases when I cross Offa’s Dyke westward. Congratulations.
