Oh now that’s interesting. Chelmsford Central went to the Tories because the BNP vote went to them (I guess the Greens just stayed home, since they obviously didn’t go LD and I can’t see a Green going for either of the other two).
With the Highland result, those aren’t actually the first preferences, but the highest number of votes the candidates received before being excluded/elected. There was a total of 2,519 valid votes. Highland Council has a really weird way of showing the results on its website, so I’m afraid I don’t have the actual first preferences to hand.
Now found the first preference votes – they’re in the complete analysis bit on the website.
Antony Gardner (Lib Dem 307 (12.1%)
Independent Herd 97 (3.8%).
SNP 837 (33%)
Independent Mackenzie 467 (18.4)
Independent Robertson 811 (31.9)
The comparative figures for the Tain result in Highland are at:

The level of real increase in the SNP vote is about the same in Tain as elsewhere if you take into account that Torrance, the deceased SNP Councillor had stood as an Independent alongside an SNP in 2007. Secondly, the decline in the Lib Dem vote here was less, which is a reflection on the effort put in by the Lib Dems, The Winning Independent would not have bee out of place as a Lib Dem by the looks of things and that may have reflected in in the Lib Dem vote drop.
