It’s not very often electoral reform tops the news headlines – which is probably no bad thing.
As yesterday was one of those rare occasions, let’s see what was being said – Lib Dem bloggers had some differences of opinion:
The Futility Monster took the subtle, understated approach with the headline “Stick Your AV Up Your Arse”
The problem is that this is purely a gimmick, done purely to ask questions of the Lib Dems. Brown has no history of interest in electoral reform,
LibCync, on the other hand, was more positive:
I can’t believe anyone can seriously suggest that we shouldn’t support this.
Mark Thompson ploughed a more middling furrow:
I, like many Lib Dems I suspect, have very mixed feelings about it.
Simon T. Kaye swings in with his PhD research to give us a more academic perspective.
as a Liberal Democrat I can only get excited about any half-serious approach to a change in the voting system.
Alex Folkes isn’t totally convinced that we can trust that nice Gordon Brown.
Today Gordon Brown is asking Parliament to agree to hold a referendum (after the election) on a change to a different voting system.
As I blogged before on the subject when it was mere conjecture – why on earth should we believe you now?
And finally, Ewan Hoyle thinks the Lib Dems would be daft to turn away from the chance of system that will deliver the party at extra 35 seats.
It it does not pass because of lack of Lib Dem support then it will have been the single most selfless (and astonishingly stupid) political decision ever made.
