Commenting on the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said:
For three years, the brave Ukrainian people have heroically defended their country against Putin’s war machine. Now we face an era-defining moment which will determine the future of our continent for generations to come.
Now, more than ever, we must stand firmly in support of our Ukrainian friends, resist Trump’s alarming attempts at a stitch up with Putin and work with our European neighbours to defend freedom and democracy.
That should start immediately, using the £40 billion of Russian assets frozen by the UK and other European countries to give Ukraine a critical boost.

Unfortunately, freezing foreign assets is one thing but stealing those assets outright is illegal, even if to be used for a good cause. It may be difficult to be held accountable for stealing those assets but that is not the point…the example it would send around the world would undermine the international rules based order that benefits us all.
My hope is that the frozen assets become part of the peace negotiations with Russia have to accept losing those assets as a compromise it must make to get a peace deal.

Those assets were stolen from the Russian people by Putin and the oligarchs. It is not wrong to sequester wealth that has been obtained by criminal activity; our courts do it all the time. If criminals choose not to put their ill-gotten gains in London, that is no loss to us.
