The other two by-elections from last night saw us field candidates where we hadn’t before, attracting almost 5 and 14% respectively.
Congratulations to new Councillor Joe Crome and his team for such a brilliant result. Here’s what he wrote about himself for the Dorking Advertiser:
I live in Leatherhead North with my wife and twin baby girls, and have spent the last nine years working with young people in Leatherhead for a local charity. I grew up in and around Leatherhead, went to school at Therfield and am passionate about helping improve our community.
My priorities for Leatherhead North include making our recreation grounds and public spaces safer, preventing antisocial behaviour, road safety (particularly Kingston Road where pedestrians cross outside One Stop), fighting for affordable housing, and making sure there is more for local young people to do.
As the only candidate who lives in Leatherhead North, I believe I can use my local knowledge and experience to make a difference and represent our community well. Please make sure you vote on June 30. See more on Facebook: “Joe Crome for Leatherhead North.”

Hurrah! We move onwards.
Looking forward (which is tough and possibly naive) I think – and beginning to open up myself to the the possibility of any more risky electoral gymnastics being severely curtailed by a Tory party hellbent on holding on to power for as long as they can…
… next year’s Council elections could be our election-cum-referendum-by-default, with UKIP or whatever Frankenstein’s hell-zombie emerges out of the ashes trying to surge again, and Labour activists probably still running for cover with knives in back in the non-metropolitan areas. Does anyone know how many seats are up for grabs then?
Before then there’s still the Batley byelection, which will be interesting primarily for the Labour selection process, and how long can KenClarke cling on in a Tory world which has abandoned him? A Rushcliffe byelection could be interesting. Anyone?
I know nothing about the local politics of Mole Valley or Leatherhead North, so have no idea if this welcome result reflects local politics or national politics (or both), but in case anyone’s curious about the referendum result here for the sake of comparison… According to Politicalbetting it was:
REMAIN 29,088 (53%) LEAVE 25,708 (47%) on a turnout of 82%
Yes, Mole Valley had one of the most active Stronger In branches, led in the main by an excellent group of LDs and voted Remain – as did most of Surrey.
A really good result there last week and this week!
Hearty congratulations to my former colleagues in Mole Valley.
Excelsior!
