Greg Dyke: Why I’m backing the Lib Dems

Greg Dyke, the broadcaster and former Director-General of the BBC is endorsing the Liberal Democrats in the General Election:

This is the most important general election in living memory. As a staunch remainer I’ll be supporting the Liberal Democrats partly because they are the leading anti-Brexit party but also because they have a progressive, centre-left, business friendly agenda. There is no way in a million years I could bring myself to support a party led by Boris Johnson, a man no-one should trust, or a party led by Jeremy Corbyn, a lifelong anti-European pretending he’s not. This is our last chance to stay in the EU.

This comes hot on the heels of Michael Heseltine’s endorsement  and that of broadcaster John Tusa.

Timothy Sainsbury also said recently that he would vote Liberal Democrat.
I suggest that a comprehensive list of Conservative and Labour former MPs and supporters, and others from the media etc be made and published. It could influence voters.

Publish these supporters .We must bang the big drum to get all the votes to win.

I agree with Bruce and nigel. We should give maximum publicity to celebrity endorsements.

This is an important endorsement to publicise because he doesn’t just talk about our Brexit stance but about our policies as well.

  • Yesterday evening, Michael Heseltine called on the electorate to vote for Liberal Democrat and Independent Tory candidates. In a rational world, that would be big news, would it not? After all, Michael Heseltine is a former Tory Deputy Prime Minister. One would have expected the Boris Broadcasting Corporation to give it prominence in the 10.00pm news bulletin that followed. Is that what happened? Not a bit of it. It wasn’t even mentioned! Now, if Jo Swinson had been seen wearing an eye shadow the colour of which had offended Janet Street-Porter, the BBC would have reported that straightaway as proof that Jo is unfit to be Prime Minister. It was great to see Chuka yesterday attacking Johnson on character. He had obviously read my recent posting imploring our leaders to do just that!

  • It would be good to have a list of high-profile endorsements from celebrities etc. (incl former Lab/Tory bigwigs). They appear on twitter occasionally – like the TV historian Dan Snow today. Presumably someone at HQ is collecting these and can list them?
