Vince demands Labour comes clean on Northern Rock

Acting Lib Dem leader Vince Cable has today been piling the pressure on Labour, launching a campaign to demand Gordon Brown tells the British taxpayer how much money has been loaned to Northern Rock, and when it will be paid back.

Writing in today’s Guardian, Vince argues the case for temporary nationalization of Northern Rock to protect the public interest:

neither the chancellor nor the prime minister have been able to give me an unequivocal assurance that the taxpayer’s money will be repaid in full, with interest, during this parliament. The likelihood is growing that billions may be lost. …

Government loses 25m records – would you trust them with ID cards?

Is there a Richter scale for cock-ups? If so, the Government has just been hit by at least a Factor 9:

Alistair Darling has blamed mistakes by junior officials at HM Revenue and Customs after details of 25 million child benefit recipients were lost. The Chancellor said information, including bank details of 7m families, had been sent on discs to the National Audit office by unrecorded delivery. Mr Darling said it was “an extremely serious failure”.

Of course mistakes happen: you cannot eliminate error, either human or machine. All you can do is minimize it. The Lib Dems have …

Labour slashes £1bn from overseas aid budget

That’s the rather shameful story which Lib Dem overseas development spokeswoman Lynne Featherstone has uncovered – and, what’s worse, the Government has hidden this budget cut from view.

You can read Lynne’s blog article in full here, but here’s the nub:

axed around £1 billion from the UK aid budget (official development assistance) – and then tried to keep it secret. … having promised in 2004 that aid levels would be at 0.47% in 2007-8, they’ve now cut that figure to 0.37% – which is equal to around £1 billion.

As it was an international development debate in Parliament today,

Who are your favourite (and least favourite) non-Lib Dem bloggers

A new poll is coming to LDV: who are your favourite, and least favourite, non-Lib Dem bloggers. Nominations are now open, so please feel free to use the comments thread. (Self-nomination is allowed, Iain.)

There’s still chance, by the way, to vote in the LDV poll asking who you would have voted for, given the chance, among those Lib Dem MPs who ruled themselves out of the leadership race. Eyes right, if you’ve not yet cast your ballot.

Julia Goldsworthy and Charles Kennedy are currently neck-and-neck, with David Laws and Steve Webb not far behind. (I have to say I think Vince’s …

Opinion: Let’s stop talking about policy!

This leadership election is, inevitably, getting a little messy. Why inevitably? Because attempts are being made to create massive policy differences where they simply don’t exist, on matters which are important to activists, but far less so to electors.

In case the advisors to Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne don’t know, the key talking points in my town are the middle classes bemoaning the price of petrol and pensioners and families, rightly, concerned about the rising price of staple foods. I wonder how many members of the two campaign teams are aware that bread has more than doubled in …

Opinion: Calamity, Conspiracy & Clegg

I can claim to have encouraged Chris Huhne to stand for the leadership when Charles Kennedy stepped down, while simultaneously believing and saying for some time that Nick Clegg will be/should be the next party leader.

I can also claim to have opposed both of them over the anodyne and partly mistaken views of the Huhne Commission – remember when PFI was thought to be a good idea?

In backing Nick I have had my credentials as a definitely left-of-centre Liberal questioned by a few parliamentary and non-parliamentary colleagues – along the lines of, “Dont you realise he is a …

The morning after the lunch-time before

Today’s newspaper headlines are unsurprising:

Clegg complains as Lib Dem leadership race turns ugly (The Independent)
Lib Dem leadership contest turns nasty in TV studio clash (The Guardian)
Chris Huhne targets ‘Calamity Clegg’ for Lib Dem leadership (Daily Mail)
Lib Dem leadership rivals clash on TV (The Times)

I hope in the cool, clear light of a Monday morning, both campaign teams will recognize that BBC1’s Politics Show clash generated a lot more heat than light, and act to draw a line under yesterday’s events.

Chris Huhne needs to understand that yesterday’s display was overly belligerent; he’s right to show real …

Opinion: Not pretty, but does it matter?

The Lib Dem leadership contest should be a fantastic opportunity for the party to display its wares, offering its most talented MPs the media spotlight to exhibit their vibrant view of liberalism, and how their leadership will elevate the party. At times – including last Thursday’s Question Time – that’s how it’s been. Today’s BBC1 Politics Show was a sad sight for anyone who wants our two would-be leaders to promenade the party in its Sunday best.

Neither candidate has an unblemished record. Nick Clegg, for example, penned an article for The Guardian in February 2006 in which he levelled …

Opinion: Why I’m supporting Nick Clegg

What is the point of the Liberal Democrats? It’s a question leveled at party supporters, in some form or another, time and time again, over and over; one almost always delivered with lashings of self-satisfaction and smugness.

It’s also an odd sort of question. Because in asking it, you are asking: What is the point in the only mainstream political party to oppose the Iraq war and Israels actions in the Middle East? What is the point in the only mainstream political party to oppose tuition fees? The only mainstream political party to propose plans to tackle inequality with radical and …

Opinion: Why I’m supporting Chris Huhne

Having spent the last four weeks or so following the leadership election closely – and having spoken to both Chris and Nick – I was interviewed yesterday lunchtime for The World this Weekend about who should be the next leader of the Liberal Democrats. This gave me the opportunity to crystallise my thinking about which of the candidates I should support (attentive readers of LDV may recall that, at the start of the campaign, I was undecided) – and I’ve come to the decision that Chris Huhne is my preferred candidate. I wanted to write briefly for …

Leadership Platform 3: Nick Clegg – Richard Allan writes…

We all know from experience that election campaigns are 90% perspiration and 10% Riso ink, and this one is no exception. Bu there are always things that keep you going during these marathon efforts.

In Nick’s campaign this has been the endorsements that people have been pouring in on the website. So for today’s campaign update, I thought I’d share what people are saying about Nick – you can add your own endorsement here!

As for what I think about Nick – and why his nickname used to be Grizzly Fish – you can find out in this video by …

Leadership platform 3: Chris Huhne on Defence

I thought I’d use my slot on Lib Dem Voice today to set out clearly my views on defence. I hope you enjoy the video below.

Thanks again to Stephen and the LDV team for this chance to reach more Lib Dem members. I’m delighted at the momentum building in this leadership campaign and I’ll be back with another message for Lib Dem Voice readers on Tuesday.

Yours,

Chris.

Brian Paddick interviewed in The Telegraph

As pointed out by TimberWolf in the comments, today’s Telegraph carries a detailed interview with Lib Dem London Mayor candidate Brian Paddick:

Unusually for a former policeman, he is against ID cards and opposes the Government’s plan to extend detention without trial for terrorist suspects. “It’s ostracising Muslims.”

When it comes to “London issues” he is against bendy buses in the city centre and thinks delivery drivers should be exempt from the congestion charge. His favourite thing about the capital is the Thames.

His main pitch, however, is that with 30 years of frontline policing experience he knows how to make Londoners feel

Have you asked a YouTube question yet?

Tens of thousands of folk have already watched Lib Dem chief executive Chris Rennard invite questions to Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne for the party’s YouTube hustings. And, at the time of writing, there have been 17 – how shall I say it? – eclectic responses.

James Graham has posted his question over at his Quaequam Blog! here. Two other bloggers have posed their questions to the candidates:

Paul Walter:

And, erm, me:

You have another week – until 25th November – to film yourself (whether on your phone, webcam, or camera) and post it to YouTube.

Opinion: The post-match QT analysis

The post-match blog analysis on the Question Time leadership special has been pretty evenly split, with a tilt towards Chris Huhne having gained the edge overall.

(Paul Walter linked through to the early reaction this morning; more have appeared since – check out the Lib Dem blog aggregator for the latest. And, if you haven’t watched the programme yet, you can see it online here.)

Last night did little to help make up my mind: both candidates, I thought, performed equally well, and displayed almost to the full their respective strengths. Which is why I take with a pinch …

Chris Huhne: the five books that have most influenced my politicial views

Liberal Democrat Voice has asked both leadership candidates to list the five books that have most influenced their political views, along with an explanation for their choice. Nick Clegg’s piece appeared earlier today.

J S Mill – “On Liberty”
This has to be top of any liberal’s list. Mill’s principle that we should be free unless inflicting harm on others encapsulates our respect for different choices. But the essay reveals an inner conflict, as Mill hints that a liberal society also requires the provision of public goods like education.

George Orwell – “Animal Farm”
Animal Farm has it all – biting …

Nick Clegg: the five books that have most influenced my politicial views

Liberal Democrat Voice has asked both leadership candidates to list the five books that have most influenced their political views, along with an explanation for their choice. Chris Huhne’s piece will appear later today.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a home filled with books. They’re a huge part of my life and shaped so much of how I think and feel. But if I’m honest, the biggest political influence in my life wasn’t Mill, Rawls or Berlin, however much I respect and admire them. I became a liberal not in a library, but over the dinner table, in the …

How important is Liberal Democrat Voice in the leadership election?

Of course, the team here at The Voice would like to think we’re essential. But in the spirit of scientific enquiry, we’ve got out our slide rules and graph paper and been analysing various statistics.

There are several different routes to take, but they all end up with us estimating that around 10-15% of people who vote in the leadership election will be readers of this site.

But is that a large number of readers? Or is that a small number of readers? And how many of our readers will talk to other voters and possibly influence them?

P.S. If you think it’s …

BBC Question Time: Lib Dem leadership election special – open thread

The two contenders for the Liberal Democrat leadership – Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne – go head-to-head on tonight’s special edition of Question Time (broadcast on BBC1 and online from 10.35 pm GMT).

The pressure will be on. Though Question Time’s audience is not large (a couple of million, or so), it’s likely that a high proportion of Lib Dem members will be tuning in; many times more than will attend all the hustings events combined. For many of the so-called ‘armchair membership’, their assessment of how each candidate has performed tonight will decide how they choose to cast their …

Opinion: Why the death of Dr David Kelly simply will not go away

More than three years after Lord Hutton published his Inquiry report, the death of Dr David Kelly simply won’t go away.

It won’t because Lord Hutton, charged with examining the circumstances of his death, did nothing of the sort, instead devoting nearly all his energies to refereeing the spat between the Government and the BBC. It won’t because his report was widely derided upon publication as a whitewash which might as well have been written by Alistair Campbell. But most of all it won’t because the conclusion that the government weapons inspector took his own life cannot be supported by …

Join the CK for constitutional affairs Facebook group

There has been much talk lately of what job Charles Kennedy should be given in the shadow cabinet. This has been fuelled by both Nick and Chris heavily indicating that they would like to see Charles back on the front bench.

My position for a long time has been that Charles should be put in charge of constitutional affairs. As one of Britain’s most popular and widely respected politicians, I feel that he is the only person who is capable of dragging the subject up the political agenda. The media like him, the public like him.

I am pleased …

‘Rocket Man’ Brian attracts Elton’s backing

Sky News’s Jon Craig has the exclusive:

Brian Paddick, the controversial former top cop chosen by the Liberal Democrats as their candidate for London Mayor, is being backed by rock legend Sir Elton John. …

Revealing his celebrity backing from the superstar whose hits include “Rocket Man”, Paddick told me: “Before I got the nomination, I got a text from David Furnish (Sir Elton’s partner) saying ‘We’ll support you’.” He says there has been no pledge of financial support so far. But I’m sure big-spending Elton can afford to donate a few bob to a political campaign.

Opinion: Let’s talk about strengths

It’s an odd leadership race for me. Though I’ve always tried to be measured in my blogging, I don’t usually find myself short of an opinion, nor find it difficult to decide which side of an argument I’m on. But this time round, I’m genuinely torn.

There’s enough negativity in the Lib Dem blogosphere, so let me speak to what I see as the top three strengths of the two candidates vying to become the party’s next leader:

Chris Huhne

1. Ambition: sometimes regarded as a dirty word, especially by us nice, decent liberals – which is a part of the reason we …

Lib Dems on telly

If you’re at home wondering what to watch, then don’t forget:

Tonight, 14th Nov, Ed Davey MP and Susan Kramer MP are appearing on on Channel 4’s Political Slot – it’s only five minutes long (7.55 pm – 8.00 pm).

They will, apparently, be talking “about issues that matter to the Liberal Democrats”. So expect proportional representation and land value tax to feature prominently.

PMQs: Vince tackles Gordon on Northern Rock

Our glorious acting leader, Vince Cable, once again proved what an asset he is to the party at this afternoon’s Prime Minister’s Questions, demanding to know (i) if it’s true that the Government has loaned Northern Rock a mammoth £24bn of taxpayers’ money; and (ii) if yes, that the money will be repaid with interest in the lifetime of the current Parliament. Unsurprisingly, Gordon ignored both questions.

It’s one of those imponderable ‘what ifs’ – but it’s interesting to consider what might have happened if Vince Cable, rather than Ming Campbell, had stood in the contest to succeed Charles Kennedy back at the start of 2006 as the ‘safe pair of hands’. An excellent media performer, popular in the Commons, respected by the commentariat: nothing seems to faze him.

Vince has handled his potentially tricky role with considerable aplomb; by contrast, Ming never quite recovered his balance from his early, nervy Commons performances as acting leader. But Vince quickly realised the party membership was unlikely to pick another balding 60-something to lead the party this time around – once bitten, twice shy – so it’s mere idle speculation.

Anyway here’s the transcript of his exchange with Gordon Brown:

Brian calls on Blair to quit

Lib Dem London mayoral candidate Brian Paddick has called on Ian Blair, the under-fire head of the Metropolitan police, to quit.

There were some eyebrows raised a couple of weeks ago, when Brian stopped short of calling on his former police colleague to step down in the wake of the Met’s conviction by the courts for endangering the public over the fatal shooting of innocent Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes. Lib Dem home affairs spokesman Nick Clegg had already called for Sir Ian’s head.

But the former deputy assistant commissioner is quoted now as saying: “I reluctantly …
