Opinon: The Calder Valley needs a modern transport system to maximise economic potential

The declaration that Hebden Bridge is the UKs ‘second city’ – lying at the heart of the suburbs of Bradford, Leeds & Manchester – has come as something of a shock to most people living there, including myself. However, underneath the hyperbole lies a serious point; that the Calder Valley lies in a sweet spot for ease of commute to the major employment centres.

But what the Calder Valley lacks – and what holds back prosperity and employment opportunities within it – is a modern, efficient transport system.

Calder Valley PPC backs regional assembly for Yorkshire

Yorkshire radio station The Pulse reports:

Yorkshire should be given a regional assembly like Scotland and Wales, according to a group of Calderdale councillors.

The idea is being discussed at the Liberal Democrat conference next month and would see decisions on things like Education, Health and Agriculture made away from Westminster.

Yorkshire, which has roughly the same population as Scotland, would be offered the chance to take control of such powers instead of having them controlled from London.

The proposal will be debated at the Liberal Democrat spring conference, which will take place in York on the 7th-9th of March.

Opinion: How my life changed forever – 100 days in!

At the start of this year I was a Lib Dem from Yorkshire working and studying in London who according to some journalists was an “unknown” – although I was quite well known in certain Lib Dem circles, especially for my quiches! The resignation of Diana Wallis, as Lib Dem MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber changed all that.
