The perils of Facebook

Top marks to Dizzy for spotting this Facebook story about the Tory MPs backing an imaginary candidate for an imaginary seat. No snide jokes about imaginary policies please.

Two new Facebook groups

Continuing this week’s Facebook theme here on Lib Dem Voice, some news about two new useful groups on the Facebook website for Lib Dems.

Firstly, Mary Reid got a good idea scant minutes ago for setting up a group for Lib Dem councillors and people interested in local government. You’ll find that group here.

Secondly, local members in Brighton – Lib Dem Voice readers’ favourite conference town – are gearing up for welcoming hundreds of the party’s most influential members to federal conference next month. They’ve set up a Welcome Wagon Facebook for conference goers …

Liberal Democrat MPs lead the way on Facebook

With Facebook apparently reaching into every corner of British life, I thought it was time to see how far MPs were catching on.

So I’ve worked with a couple of colleagues to look up over 600 MPs from the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties (excluding the Speaker and Deputy Speakers) to see how many have Facebook profiles.

Lib Dems leading the way on Facebook

In a quiet moment in Ealing (no sniggering at the back), I thought it would be interesting to see how much the various parties are using social networking site to support their efforts in the two parliamentary by-elections – and whether my sneaking suspicion that the Liberal Democrats are making the best use of it are true. It’s possible that the other parties have secret groups we don’t know about, but based on what we cansee, here are the stats* – represented for your viewing pleasure in traditional bar chart form, with exciting added 3-D perspective:

Who is the hippest MP?

The Daily Mirror has been looking at the online presence of various MPs: “It’s a fine line between being able to relate to the younger generation … and coming over like a ‘square’ father letting what’s left of his hair down. Here we log on and see how hip our MPs’ sites are”.

And the results?

1 out of 10: Ann Widdecombe
2 out of 10: David Cameron, Boris Johnson
4 out of 10: Gordon Brown
3 out of 10: Hazel Blears, John Redwood
5 out of 10: Tony Blair, Tessa Jowell
6 out of 10: Lembit Opik

and the top scorer is …

7 out of 10: …

Scottish LD candidate comes a cropper thanks to social network websites

Be careful what your friends post.

Incidentally, if you use MySpace / Facebook et al there is a school of thought which suggests that under the principle of better safe than sorry, you should consider putting an imprint on your profile page.

Lib Dem MPs flock to Facebook

There’s been a flurry of Liberal Democrat MPs starting to use the social networking site Facebook in the last few weeks – including party leader Ming Campbell (the first UK party leader to do so, just as he was the first on Google Video and YouTube), Jo Swinson, Steve Webb, Stephen Williams and Lynne Featherstone.

Facebook used to only be open to students – and so there is a strong Lib Dem Youth and Student presence on it – but has recently been opened up to anyone.

If you are a Facebook user yourself or you …
