Theresa May and Donald Trump gave a press conference in Washington DC today.
Laura K. (BBC) asked about torture. President Trump said twice that he believes that torture works (as he said in the campaign). He also said that he had delegated and would take advice from his Defense Secretary (whom he had appointed and who has been approved by the Senate).

Jurisdiction is an issue. If an alleged torture victim comes before a court in the UK they are unlikely to find evidence reliable. There is an additional risk that people who are known by victims of torture are actually unrelated to the issue.
The UK lost a court case brought by the Republic of Ireland. The USA is not a party to the case, but needs to understand that the UK needs to avoid exacerbates tensions.
