BBC Question Time: open thread

Chris Huhne, Lib Dem shadow home secretary, and the man 49% of the party voted to be its leader, is one of the panellists on 2008’s first edition of Question Time tonight (broadcast on BBC1 and online from 10.35 pm GMT).

He’ll be alongside Labour’s Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, the Tories’ shadow defence secretary Liam Fox, the political editor of the Daily Mirror, Kevin Maguire, and author and Tory PPC, Louise Bagshawe.

(There’s an interesting symmetry here with the last edition of Question Time in 2007, when three politicians representing the main parties were joined by former editor of the Daily …

Have you asked a YouTube question yet?

Tens of thousands of folk have already watched Lib Dem chief executive Chris Rennard invite questions to Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne for the party’s YouTube hustings. And, at the time of writing, there have been 17 – how shall I say it? – eclectic responses.

James Graham has posted his question over at his Quaequam Blog! here. Two other bloggers have posed their questions to the candidates:

    Paul Walter:

    And, erm, me:

You have another week – until 25th November – to film yourself (whether on your phone, webcam, or camera) and post it to YouTube.

BBC Question Time: Lib Dem leadership election special – open thread

The two contenders for the Liberal Democrat leadership – Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne – go head-to-head on tonight’s special edition of Question Time (broadcast on BBC1 and online from 10.35 pm GMT).

The pressure will be on. Though Question Time’s audience is not large (a couple of million, or so), it’s likely that a high proportion of Lib Dem members will be tuning in; many times more than will attend all the hustings events combined. For many of the so-called ‘armchair membership’, their assessment of how each candidate has performed tonight will decide how they choose to cast their …

Video: Ed Davey on the train

I flagged up last night that Lib Dem MPs Ed Davey and Susan Kramer were occupying Channel 4’s Political Slot:

Edward Davey MP discusses rising train fares and talks about Liberal Democrat plans to fund investment in the railways through tolls on foreign lorries.

    Lib Dems on telly

If you’re at home wondering what to watch, then don’t forget:

Tonight, 14th Nov, Ed Davey MP and Susan Kramer MP are appearing on on Channel 4’s Political Slot – it’s only five minutes long (7.55 pm – 8.00 pm).

They will, apparently, be talking “about issues that matter to the Liberal Democrats”. So expect proportional representation and land value tax to feature prominently.

    The leadership contest on video

For those who (like me) missed the Clegg-Huhne debate on Andrew Marr’s Sunday AM show on BBC1 last Sunday, here’s the link. Well worth watching, as both candidates are on excellent form.

And NewburyToday.co.uk was on hand at the party’s South Central regional conference to film head-to-head vox pops with them both, which you can watch here.

PS: my grateful thanks to Rob Fenwick for his encore on Lib Dem Voice this weekend, while various members of the editorial collective were otherwise occupied.

    Video exclusive: the CK interview

You know how it is. You’re wandering through Brighton’s Grand hotel, and you bump into former Lib Dem leader, Charles Kennedy (okay, it was by arrangement, but no matter). What would you ask him?

Lib Dem Voice put the following four questions to Charles when we met up earlier today:

    * What do you think of the current state of the party? Should we be despairing or hopeful?

    * What do you think the Lib Dems stand for today?

    * Do you support the party’s idea of a referendum on the European Union, in or out?

    * Do you want to come back as leader

Video exclusive: Chris & Clegg go head-to-head (Part I)

Stephen and I have been around conference and – armed with his camera and my brazen cheek – managed to put four quick questions to top Lib Dem MPs, Chris Huhne and Nick Clegg.

At last night’s Independent fringe, Steve Richards chaired a meeting at which the pair were the only speakers. While they have spoken from the same fringe platform before, the crafty Indy hacks had asked only the two of them. (Something they seem to have forgotten to mention to either Nick or Chris when inviting them.) This was therefore billed by the paper as the first-ever live …

The Battle of Trimdon Green (or “Labour yobs attack lawful Lib Dem campaigners”)

Thanks to Lib Dem Jonathan Wallace, we have video evidence of Labour party councillors and activists attempting to distrupt the launch of the Lib Dem campaign in Sedgefield by Andrew Stunnell MP. While Lib Dem challenger Greg Stone explained his policies to attending media, the Labour campaign team heckled and forcibly distrupted the event as you can see on YouTube.

The group mocking Greg for being from Newcastle included a Labour councillor from… erm, Newcastle.

Lib Dem Voice has already noted the unorthodox poster techniques apparently used in this campaign, and also the local newspaper’s verdict that Labour …
