LDV up-and-running again – help keep it that way!

Our apologies to LDV readers who’ve found themselves deprived of our company for the last couple of hours. As regulars will know, we do run into these occasional technical problems – normally it’s near the end of the month when our bandwidth limit’s been exceeded and we need to shove another 50p in the meter. This time we collapsed under the strain of search engine requests (as I understand it from our tech-wizard Ryan who genuinely does understand it).

Paul Walter over at his Liberal Burblings blog has helpfully posed the question ‘Should we have a whip round for LibDem

LDV doesn’t do statporn, but if we did… (Jan ’09)

… We’d say a big thank you to the 23,696 ‘absolute unique visitors’* who read Liberal Democrat Voice in January, our second highest total ever, and a whopping 53% increase on a year ago.

Whether you’re a regular here, or an occasional ‘popper-by’, we’re delighted you looked in. And if you enjoy reading LDV, why not try writing for LDV?

* Google Analytics’ term: it broadly means people using over 23,000 different computers visited LDV at least once. Some people may be counted more than once (e.g. home and work computer),whilst some people may not be counted (e.g. two different …

Dr Pack gets third degree

I don’t mean he’s now even better qualified to run Lib Dem Voice, I mean the Voice’s own Mark Pack been answering some tough questions from Sunny Hundal at the Liberal Conspiracy.

Amongst the questions are these:

  • No doubt you get accused of being a party mouthpiece all the time, since you actually work for the party. How would you counter that accusation?
  • Isn’t focusing only on Libdem news unlikely to attract new members?
  • Do you think Libdembloggers aren’t cohesive enough? Do they not talk to each other enough?

You can read the full interview here – and maybe even answer the questions …

What do you make of LabourList.org?

LabourList – self-consciously branded by its founder, Derek Draper, as Labour’s answer to ConservativeHome – officially went live today, earning generous press coverage (in terms of column inches, if not warmth of reception).

So, what do we make of it so far?

It’s interesting that, as was true of both ConHome (with Tim Montgomerie) and LDV (with Rob Fenwick) when first launched, it’s a former party staffer who’s set up LabourList: perhaps not surprisingly, a certain amount of insider-knowledge is pretty useful when establishing a must-read party site. Even less surprisingly, if you want it to be seen as …

You may have noticed that next to some people’s comments is a small picture of themselves, such as:

Help make The Voice even bigger and better in 2009

2008 has been a tremendously successful year for Liberal Democrat Voice, with more readers, more content and more comments than ever. But we want to be even bigger and better in 2009.

You’ll have seen some of our plans already, including the introduction of new regular features such as James Graham’s weekly Lib Dig Pig round-ups (covering the best of the internet beyond the Liberal Democrat blogosphere).

We also want to expand our online advertising and our presence at party events so that we can reach out to that wider pool of people who are interested in the sorts of stories we …

LDV still doesn’t do statporn, but if we did… (Dec ’08)

We’d say a big thank you to the 210,706 ‘absolute unique visitors’* who read Liberal Democrat Voice in 2008, up over 167% up on the comparable figure for 2007 (78,962). For the record, the comparable figure for Iain Dale’s Blog was 601,182.

In December alone, we welcomed 20,047 absolute unique visitors, up 40% on the comparable figure for 2007 (14,249).

Ooops, small outage

I’m sure that either Mark or Stephen will do some stat porn for the last year, but one of the problems LibDemVoice is starting to experience is that we are just having too many visitors for our server to cope with.
Having crashed it earlier this week, I added WP Super Cache to the system, unfortunately this made it even worse (although this plugin is working fine on my own blog). Again the server crashed, so I downgraded to WP Cache, and the server went down once more.
After some kind chats with Adam at Dataflame we are back up and …

LDV tops Iain Dale’s list of Lib Dem blogs

Modesty (or should that be embarrassment?) almost forbids us from mentioning that Lib Dem Voice has topped Iain Dale’s list for top Lib Dem Blog of the Year. The results of a poll of 1,380 of his blog’s readers were as follows:

LibDem Blog of the Year

1. LibDem Voice 29%
2. Norfolk Blogger 23%
3. Lynne Featherstone 22%

Thanks to Iain and his readers; and congratulations from us to Nich Starling and Lynne.

Nick+1 on LDV tomorrow

In 2007, Christmas came early for a 39 year-old MP from Sheffield Hallam, when Nick Clegg was elected leader of the Liberal Democrats on 18th December. To mark his first anniversary as party leader tomorrow, Lib Dem Voice will be publishing an exclusive article by The Man Himself, as well as opinion pieces by a range of Liberal Democrats. Click back here tomorrow to read and enjoy, and to contribute to the debate on LDV’s pages.

LibDemVoice on your Mobile

For those who read Voice on their mobile or Blackberry, we’ve recently created a special theme.
This is a very stripped down version of the site with less colours and no sidebar.
It should increase the speed in which the LibDemVoice loads and cost you less in data downloads.
If you prefer the original theme, scroll to the bottom and click the link.

LDV still doesn’t do statporn, but if we did…

We’d say a big thank you to the 48,671 ‘absolute unique visitors’* who read Liberal Democrat Voice in November, our highest total ever, and a whopping 283% increase on a year ago. For the record, the comparable figure for Iain Dale was 64,552.

(It would only be proper to note, though, that the circumstances for the last month’s sudden surge were sad ones: a post entitled ‘Baby P‘ became (temporarily) the top Google return for that search term, and resulted in very heavy traffic.)

The recent trend for Lib Dem Voice is hugely positive:

KB Linker – our keyword list

We are currently using a WordPress plug-in called KB Linker to automatically translate certain key words and phrases into hyperlinks in our posts.  So if I type Nick Clegg here in this post, the program should automatically convert that into a link for www.nickclegg.com

Doing this saves us time writing posts, offers a valuable service to our readers, and also helps a little on the search-engine optimization front.  The more links a site gets, the better it does in search enging rankings, particularly from heavily trafficked sites like LDV.

Our keyword list currently includes the websites of all Lib Dem MPs, AMs, …

Comment formatting 101

Here’s a brief posting describing how to do formatting in comments. It may come in useful for those of you who engage in huge debates on thread comments – and I’m sorry if it seems hopelessly basic for those who have been on the net for a while.

This site, like almost all on the internet, uses a simple programming language called HTML to do formatting. You can use HTML yourself in the comments to help make it clearer when you are quoting or for emphasis.

HTML works using codes that surround the words that they refer to.  Usually …

Share and Enjoy: the new buttons appearing at the foot of our stories

You may have noticed a new set of buttons appearing at the foot of stories on Liberal Democrat Voice (thanks Ryan!).

These buttons allow you to share our stories on some of the most popular social bookmarking sites, such as Digg and Del.icio.us. (What is social bookmarking? It’s a way of saving links to stories that you like, but in a way which lets your friends also see what you’ve saved – and in turn you can see what has caught your friends’ fancy. The BBC site has a neat short introduction to the topic.)

Nickclegg.com is live!

Or so says an excited text message arriving in the LDV Cupboard in the bowels of the conference centre in the dead of night, interrupting an all-important late-nite new-staff induction session. (Basically, “So, what do you find funny on the internet?”)

A confused phonecall later and we have the following information: NickClegg.com brings together a diverse set of content from a wide variety of different social networking sites and photo sites and the like, along with some special content that’s unique to NickClegg.com

NickClegg.com supports Nick Clegg’s official role as party leader, and in no way undermines or detracts from …

3 from LDV in top 50 Lib Dem list

The Telegraph is continuing to run through the list of top 50 most influential Lib Dems, as compiled by Iain Dale and four unnamed party sources. Yesterday was numbers 41-50; today it’s 31-40, and three Lib Dem Voice regulars make the cut:

32. Mike Smithson

Founder, PoliticalBetting.com

Smithson has established his website, PoliticalBetting.com as one of the most respected and visited political websites on the net. Never shy about his LibDem history and credentials he is a shrewd observer of the political scene. So successful has he been at political

LDV: your name here

Lib Dem Voice has, we notice, come in 15th in Iain Dale’s / Total Politics list of top 100 blogs. More important for the Lib Dem blogosphere is the fact that all the top 10 Lib Dem blogs made it into the top 100, and a further 11 into the top 200.

But you won’t be surprised that the Voice’s attention was grabbed by this prediction from Mr Dale that in the next year:

LibDem Voice will receive a cash injection similar to LabourHome from a rich LibDem donor

I’m sitting by my BlackBerry now, just waiting for it to light …

LDV doesn’t do statporn, but if we did…

We’d probably note that in July we had almost 15,000 ‘absolute unique visitors’*. That’s a little down on June’s record of almost 17,000 – but still our third best month overall. For comparison, Iain Dale received 59,000 absolute unique visitors and Guido Fawkes 113,000.

Thank you to all our readers, whether you visit only occasionally, or pop by often.

Remember, if you’ve got something to say, and you want to say it to thousands of readers, then do consider writing an article for LDV, and email it to [email protected]. We publish some guidance for those wishing to write for the …

How’s your campaign going?

LDV is hoping to bring a series of podcasts from the campaign trail this April in the run up to a big set of local elections across the country.  (If you don’t know who’s having elections, Keith Edkins has a handy trailer.  “Cheshire West and Chester” sounds like a clumsy name for a local authority!)

You can use this to promote your local campaign, appeal for help, and tell us what’s happening in your neck of the woods.

There are two ways to take part: volunteer to take part in a telephone interview or just get on the  blower to the …
