The News of the World and giving readers what they want

No, not a trailer for your super soaraway Lib Dem Voice on Sunday, but a quick quirk-alert on reader figures at our site this week.

It’s one of my jobs at Lib Dem Voice to keep an eye on the stats, including visitor numbers, popular posts, search terms and lots of other data.

These give us blogging ideas, help us to plan (and sometimes crow), and are another strand of audience feedback – alongside the comments threads, survey responses, emails and phonecalls, and of course the articles themselves that people submit.

So I thought I’d briefly share a surprising finding from …

That’s a notch down on our November figure of c.59,000, but almost double the equivalent figure for December ’09 of c.27,000.

Incidentally, if you’re wondering why we publish our readership figures — is it show-off vanity, or pedantic statophilia — I came up with a few reasons at the start of last year. The arguments still stack up, I think.

LDV doesn’t do statporn, but if we did (June ’10)

… We’d say a big thank you to the 49,916 ‘absolute unique visitors’* who read Liberal Democrat Voice in June.

Though that’s way down on our May 2010 figure of c.136,000, that was an exceptional month – with a general election plus the formation of the new coalition government. In fact, compared with June 2009, Lib Dem Voice’s readership is up by one-third.

This brings our absolute unique visitor readership for the last year to date (1 July 2009 – 30 June 2010) to 582,154, over 80% higher than the equivalent figure for 2008-09 of 322,654.

LDV doesn’t do statporn, but if we did (May ’10)

… We’d say a big thank you to the 136,557 ‘absolute unique visitors’* who read Liberal Democrat Voice in May.

That’s over 20% higher compared to our April 2010 figure of c.112,000, and we are up some 227% on the equivalent figure for May ’09. Anyone would think there had just been a general election. In fact, the site passed 100,000 unique visitors by 14 May … which suggests traffic has stabilised since at c.2,500 absolute uniques a day.

This brings our absolute unique visitor readership for the last year to date (1 June 2009 – 31 May 2010) to 503,653, over 87% higher than the equivalent figure for 2008-09 of 268,359.

Belated LDV statporn for 2009. And my answer to the question, does it matter?

Call it laziness, call it New Year ennui, but I’d half a mind not to re-commence my monthly LDV statporn posts. I realise they can be a little bit self-congratulatory and/or self-obsessed. But I’ve finally got round to doing it. And here’s why.

First, because I think it’s only fair to LDV’s readers and, more importantly, our contributors (both those who write for us, and those who comment on what’s written here) to know how many people read this site. It is not my blog, or that of any of the small, volunteer team who runs LDV: it is …

This is our lowest readership figure of the year to date, down a notch on last month’s 22,000 – not surprising in a holiday month and when genuinely exciting political news is scarce. For the record, August’s 20k is still more than 50% up compared with the same month last year (13k).

This brings our absolute unique visitor readership for the last year to date (1 Sept 2008 – 31 Aug 2009) to 299,315, more than double the equivalent figure for 2007-08 of 147,363.

This is our lowest readership figure of the year to date, down about one-third on last month’s 38,000 – which either means we’ve been rubbish this month, or else that the political excitements of MPs’ expenses and the local/Euro elections, which spiked our figures in May and June, have subsided. Or a bit of both. For the record, July’s 22k is still more than 50% up compared with the same month last year (14k).

This brings our absolute unique visitor readership for the last year to date (1 Aug 2008 – 31 July 2009) to 293,070, more than double the equivalent figure for 2007-08 of 141,626.
