Every year, Women in Public Life hold awards to celebrate female leaders across politics, journalism and business. As Dame Kelly Holmes puts it on their website:
Women are under represented in business, the arts and politics. These awards help to highlight and reward the achievements of women and encourage others to pursue leadership roles and to strive for greater representation. I encourage all to nominate and get involved
This year’s shortlists have just been announced and there are three Lib Dem nominees. They are:
Peer of the Year: Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece
Devolved Parliament/Assembly Member: Caroline Pidgeon AM
MP of the Year: Jo Swinson MP
The Awards ceremony will take place in March. Previous Liberal Democrat winners include Annette Brooke, Kirsty Williams and Shirley Williams. Our own Mary Reid is a former nominee for the Local Government category. Good luck to our trio of nominees for this year.

Jo, save the Equality Act, 2010 from being watered down, and get equalities explicitly back at the core of our Governemnt agenda with measurable outcomes, and you will have my support for being awarded a ‘lifetime’ achievement award.

If Jo saves the general duty on the Equality and Human Rights Commission to work towards the elimination of discrimination (the current Enterprise and Regulatory Bill is proposing to axe this duty which was introduced in the 2010 Equality Act), and if she saves the specific duty on all public authorities to promote good community relations (which is currently being reviewed by a Tory-dominated panel), and if she saves the Equality Impact Assessments which require public authorities to think about how new policies could potentially discriminate (Cameron has announced they are to be axed)… then Jo has my vote.
