Today we’re highlighting the campaign of Sal Brinton, Lib Dem candidate for Watford …

Watford nearly proved to be one of the shocks of the 2005 General Election, as Sal Brinton took the Lib Dems from a distant third place to a very close second. Just 1,148 votes separate Sal from Labour Minister and former Whip, now Justice Minister Claire Ward, with the Conservatives in third place.

The Watford constituency includes not only the whole of Watford Borough, but also a third of the area of Three Rivers District Council – Lib Dem majority controlled since 1999.

Since Sal’s selection as Watford’s PPC, the constituency has seen a gain of eight District and Borough councillors from the Conservatives, plus the re-election of Watford’s Mayor, Dorothy Thornhill.

Sal’s background in business and industry has proved to be a strong asset, with voters recognizing her experience and competence. Sal has led many campaigns, including those to save local Post Offices and ensure the development of the Health Campus at Watford General Hospital. In addition, the Lib Dems continue to have a strong local government record in the constituency, with both Lib Dem administrations cutting the council tax this year.

Despite now being in third place, the Conservatives continue to throw money into the seat, whilst Labour has clearly not given up the fight to retain a Government minister. Please support Sal’s campaign with the funding we need to make a real difference.
