Whilst I was catching a few hours sleep – I find 24 hours with no sleep is pretty much my limit – the results were declared for all but one of the regional lists. Sadly we lost out, mainly to UKIP, in four of the regions and our hopes were pinned on Eluned Parrott gaining a seat in South Wales Central. But once again we came fourth behind UKIP and missed out.
So the final position is that we only have one Welsh AM, Kirsty Williams, who bucked the trend, got 52% of the vote and increased her majority in the constituency seat of Brecon & Radnorshire. Warm congratulations to her, and commiserations to those who lost.
The final breakdown of Assembly members is:
Labour – 29
Plaid Cymru – 12
Conservative – 11
UKIP – 7
Liberal Democrats – 1

bittersweet for kirsty, am sorry to see peter black edged out, eluned too – but regional seats depend on getting party botes and i wonder if the strategy of doing nothing (not even a token leaflet) outside of target areas helps that. Greens also suffered for this, whereas kippers ‘worked the sytem’ and got 7 AMs, alas.
also awful to see 4th or 5th places in areas LDs challenged in – Swansea West, Newport East, Ponty – and little sign of movement in Ceredigion or of a revival in Montgomery.
Kirsty has resigned as leader of the Welsh Lib Dems after the disastrous results.
Four of five Assembly seats lost.
Kirsty is an outstanding Lib Dem. I hope she will one day be Leader.
I have always voted for Plaid Cymru, yet I am genuinely sorry to see some fined Lib dem A.M’s fail to regain their seats. Kirsty Williams is a genuine first class Welsh lady one I would be more than pleased to have as my A.M.
