A couple of weeks ago, in the immediate afterglow of the three US presidential debates, Lib Dem Voice set up a poll asking: Is it now time for the UK to introduce televised debates between the major party leaders prior to a general election?
Here’s what you told us:
• Yes, it is time – 83% (248)
• No, it is not time – 15% (46)
• Don’t know – 2% (6)
Total Votes: 300. Poll ran: 17th-28th October 2008
I think that’s probably the most overwhelming result we’ve yet had from an LDV readers’ poll. Of course, the probability of Gordon Brown agreeing to share a stage with Nick Clegg or David Cameron in a televised leaders’ debate at the next general election is nothing like 83%.

IS IT NOW TIME… – kind of suggests that it was previously acceptable for there to be no TV debate but that circumsatances have now change to make it acceptable…
Well here’s a big question – will Nick Clegg debate with David Cameron even if Brown’s a no show?
(Alternatively a Gordon Brown impersonator could be commissioned to sit there and say nothing useful. It won’t be much different from the real thing.)
Now is the time to start the petiton on the downing st website. That is they only prressure likely to force Brown to attend.
