  • I think I’m right in saying that James Gibson-Watt had previously been a Powys Cllr, I’m sure someone else will correct me if that is wrong!

Congratulations to the team there, a great result.

Scotland still seems like a Liberal free zone, but the net gains and no losses this Parliament elsewhere at least show that the there a LibDem embers glowing elsewhere…

  • Good news. Parallels with the recent gain from the Tories in Richmond in the council seat held by the guy who defeated Vince. More grist to the mill.

  • David Faggiani 14th Aug '15 - 10:14am

Wow. That is one Independent council.

  • Peter Thornton 14th Aug '15 - 10:25am

“Ward by Ward, Seat by Seat” as our new leader said in his acceptance speech.

It would be good to have a running total somewhere on the front page of LDV

  • Excellent. Well done to the local team – and thankyou. Don’t under-estimate the boost you give to the rest of us.

@Peter Thornton : “Ward by Ward, Seat by Seat”……. ignoring the parish and town councils I make the by-election tally post general election stands at:
    Conservative……………………18 (+1)
    Labour …………………………….. 17 (-)
    LIBERAL DEMOCRAT …..10 (+4)
    SNP…………………………………….10 (+1)
    UKIP…………………………………….2 (-3)
    GREEN……………………………….0 (-1)
Think I’m up to date there.

    Puzzled by 105%.

  • This will make so much difference in Powys. But don’t be fooled, many of the Independents are either Labour or Conservatives they are dishonestly hiding behind the “Independent” cloak protecting themselves from their own electorate. That is why this win is so important. People have started to vote in real issues which can be supported by a team which is open, transparent and clear on policies. Great news for us all today.

  • Am I right in understanding that Councillor Gibson-Watt is a descendent of James Watt, who invented the steam-engine?

  • John Tilley 14th Aug '15 - 2:21pm

    Well done!
That just leaves 9 Tories and 48 Condependents to go ! 🙂

I hope this is the start of step by step progress in Wales.

“The guy” who defeated Vince Cable in Twickenham is actually a woman – Tania Mathias.

  • Well done and congratulations to all the team. The tide is turning.
Thanks Glenn for that encouraging tally of post general election by-election results.

  • Simon Banks 15th Aug '15 - 9:45am

The number of votes looks very low. It would be interesting to know what the turnout percentage was and whether this is typical in Powys, at least of by-elections.

“Swing from UK general election 2020”? Looks like we did just as badly in 2020 as in 2015!

    Excellent result, anyway.

  • An excellent result by a great team in an area that has to become a heartland for us once again. One comment, I didn’t see it advertised much in the run up. A couple of days helping in the beautiful Wye valley would have been bliss.

    Take a wax jacket.
