Good news from the Liberal Democrat MEPs with the success this month for Diana Wallis’s campaign to get more information about Euro-MPs’ attendance records published:
[Diana Wallis] welcomed the Parliament’s decision at her instigation to publish on its internet site in collated form information about all Members’ attendance at plenary and committee meetings…:
“Making such public information more accessible is a modest step for the Parliament to take, but it is an important one, particularly ahead of the next elections in June. Citizens need to have the tools to keep their elected representatives to account.” [DianaWallisMEP.org.uk]

In the European election campaign, we really need to highlight the appalling attendance record of some of the UKIP MEPs, in particular, to underline how useless most of them are.
I read Clegg’s article in the Indie pushing the Euro. Yes, Yes he said not now in 5 years time but what is he doing putting this back on the agenda ? The FT interview might just have been a few loose words. But this was a proactive article putting us several parsecs ahead of the political consensus and public opinion on a “third rail” issue.
Now I’m not slagging him off entirely. In fact I rather warm to the courage of it all.
But where is this going ? The national polling is shaky to say the least, the recession is going to focus peoples minds on bread and butter issues and we get limited media exposure outside of election time frames. Why spend political capital on the Euro ?
I wish I could get excited about such things. To motivate me i would like to hear about outcomes from political processes rather than inputs.
