Nick Clegg responds as more Labour councillors deride extra money for poor pupils

Following Manchester Labour’s extraordinary attack on the pupil premium – describing the policy as a “sham” – news reaches The Voice via Lib Dem councillor Steve Beasant that a Labour cabinet member on North East Lincolnshire Council has joined his Manchester colleagues in their criticism.

As Paul Walter reported earlier, Nick Clegg was asked about the comments of Manchester’s Labour councillors at Tuesday’s Deputy Prime Minister’s Questions by Lib Dem MP Duncan Hames. Here’s the full exchange:

In the early twentieth century, large public meetings and lengthy public speeches were expected of – and needed by – Parliamentary candidates fighting vigorous campaigns. A century on, candidates fighting vigorous campaigns frequently get by without organising any public meetings or giving any public speeches longer than a few minutes of opening remarks at a local organisation’s hustings.

Yet although these forms of personal, direct contact between candidate and voter have declined sharply over the last century, the opportunities for such contact via the internet have increased sharply in the last few years.

Based on the amount of traffic they’ve passed on to www.libdems.org.uk in 2008, the top five local Liberal Democrat sites (excluding blogs) were (with changes in brackets from last year’s top five):

  2. vincentcable.org.uk (+2)
  3. brentlibdems.org.uk (-2)
  4. henleylibdems.org.uk (NEW)
  5. gloucester-libdems.co.uk (NEW)

Steve’s new entry at the top of the list is very impressive, particularly as his site is based on his ward, rather than a whole Parliamentary constituency or council area.
