Your choice to take on Ken Livingstone

Early next year London Liberal Democrats will choose their candidate to take on Ken Livingstone for the post of London Mayor.

Naturally, Lib Dem Voice will be analysing the field of candidates as they emerge, but let’s first of all hear from you.

Tell us in the comments box who YOU would like to see running as a candidate in the selection. You can enter more than one name, and it doesn’t have to be the name of a person you’d necessarily vote for – just tell us who you’d like to see appear on the selection ballot paper.

Remember, you don’t have to tell the world who you are- so if you’d like to name your suggestions anonymously, just enter a pseudonym.

    … well why not?

Maines for Mayor. We even already have the URL.

And Lynne would be great too. Or Susan Kramer again?

  • Simon Hughes

Anyone but Simon Hughes, given how poor his campaign was last time.

  • John Stevens

  • John who?

  • I wouldn’t recommend running to any London MP after Simon’s experience, it sends a very negative message to your own constituency and you’re not going to win.

The Mayor race is also one for a big picture media player rather than a community campaigner. Particularly given our lack of campaigning presence in many parts of the captial.

John Stevens is a former MEP and businessman, I believe

  • John Stevens – former MEP / City type

I don’t care as long as they realise they are not going to win. The aim of the mayoral candidates is not necessarily even to maximise the number of Assembly seats won. It’s to ensure that there is a campaign which develops campaign techniques, refreshes moribund parties (including those we win ‘too easily’ and therefore didn’t really bother with last year) and is used as a trial run for those constituencies wishing to be viewed as target seats for the 09 election. So let’s have someone who will lead an active campaign, be a presentable face and be prepared to kick complacent local parties up the arse.

  • Sarah Teather?

    On seconds thoughts, no.

    Ben Abbotts?

This can only be a job for Mark Oaten.

As Politically Restricted says – we need someone who accepts a realistic strategy around helping to raise the party’s profile and develop campaigning across the capital, a team player, and who will concentrate on media coverage and fund-raising. We should not run an MP or someone who thinks it is up to them to decide the strategy. The electoral objectives in 2008 should be around winning some constituency GLA seats, more GLA seats overall and developing target areas for future success.

  • What about Steve Hitchens. Experience, but not an MP.

  • Grace Goodlad 2nd Nov '06 - 1:02pm

    Tricky.

We need profile but not someone is afraid of jeopardising their parliamentary seat etc.

    What about a celeb supporter?

    Or a boycot?

It’s all very well wanting to get more London Assembly members elected BUT I still think we need to focus more on ensuring the AMs are useful.

  • Bloomin’ ‘eck. Me Jimmie Crankie gag has been removed….

    …that was good that was….
