Conservatives admit breaking the law over David Cameron’s free flight

Written by Mark Pack on 15th January 2008 – 11:04 pm

As Newsnight has reported, the Conservatives have admitted failing to declare to the Electoral Commission a free flight David Cameron received in 2005. Edward Llewellyn, his Chief of Staff, wrote to the Commission stating that:

Mr Cameron would therefore be grateful if you could please add this to his declaration with the Electoral Commission.

Which is one way of saying, “oh bugger, we’ve been caught out, we failed to declare the donation within the legal time limit, and weren’t going to declare it at all until those pesky BBC journalists came along, so could you just now add it to the files anyway and let’s pretend nothing happened and all be friends again?”

Oh and he also wrote, regarding another flight:

We are writing to the Registrar to correct the entry in the House of Commons register.

P.S. Of course, this isn’t the first time that David Cameron has run into problems with keeping to the rules when it comes to money. Nor is it the second time. Oops. Ah well, I’m sure he can have a friendly chat over a cup of tea with Mr. Hain about what to do when you just keep on failing to keep to the rules time after time.

    Glass houses, Mark, glass houses.

  2. Mark Pack Says:

By which I presume you mean that one of the mystery three Lib Dem MPs poised to defect to the Tories that you promised us was really on the flight too being sweet-talked by David? Oooh, exciting.

  3. John Holmes Says:

The Liberal Democrats unlike the Tory and Labour Party had the very good sense to apposed British participation in the War in Iraq and now support a swift withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

Unlike the so-called modern compassionate Tory Party, Nick Clegg would not tar with the same brush the genuine sick, disabled and dying and heartlessly label them all scroungers.

I’m sure Dave Cameron would like nothing better than to reintroduce the workhouse and feed IB claimants on gruel with daily beatings, they are indeed “The nasty Party”.

Nick Clegg, is like a breath of fresh air and unlike Labour will not seek to trash our rights or index us like cattle on some farmers’ database, nor spy on our every move in what has almost become a Police state.

Vote for Nick Clegg, the guardian of freedom, liberty and equality!

  6. Mark Pack Says:

Er, yes. The Electoral Commission has said it’s found no evidence that the Liberal Democrats broke any rules. In Cameron’s case, the rules have been broken three times now.

  7. Cheltenham Robin Says:

This is all getting rather silly.

Until we have fair and tranparent funding of political parties this is going to go on and on with tit for tat accusations.

  8. Hywel Morgan Says:

I tend to agree Robin - where the only reason a donation is coming to light as illegal is because it was on the register of gifts to members suggests that there is a lack of culpability even if technically there is a breach of the law.

It all acts as a smokescreen for the Hain donation issue - and I don’t see why we should be helping Labour muddy the water on that.
