Much of the blame has been apportioned to campaign director Grant Shapps, the shadow housing minister, who was promptly stripped of his role running by-elections. It was Mr Shapps, and the then Tory chairman Francis Maude, who persuaded Mr Cameron to put his name on the Ealing ballot paper, something the Tory leader at first resisted.

I hope the electoral commission have been reading their copy of the Telegraph today and will be asking the Tory agent why he broke the exspenses limit by a mere 25%. This and their publishing of stats allegedly from the postal vote count. We know that they ‘borrow’ our campaign manuals but clearly they haven’t read ALDCs Election Law Handbook.
Yes, I can see that if I were a leader who had been so closely associated with Tony Lit and the Ealing campaign, I would go round telling people that putting my name on the ballot paper had been someone else’s idea, and then sack them, so they get the blame…
If it is proven that £125k was spent in violation of a limit, then Houston has a problem.
But I note that the author is Melissa Kite.
