Unofficial Lib Dem Facebook fan group exceeds 100,000 members

It’s less than a week since Lib Dem Voice brought you news of a fresh new unofficial Facebook fan group, We got Rage Against the Machine to #1, we can get the Lib Dems into office!

We noted then that the group was “almost as big” as the official Lib Dem Facebook group, having just reached the 13,000 members mark.

Since then (its official web address) has gone well and truly viral, and today it passed the 100,000 member mark. In fact it didn’t just pass it, it smashed it. As I type it stands at 102,759 members. By the time you read this it will be more, many more.

Roy Greenslade, the Guardian’s media commentator, has (rightly) noted that – for all the talk of this being the first internet election – to date it’s been very traditional: the one defining moment to date was broadcast on television.

But of course media are not mutually exclusive. And what we’re seeing now on the back of the TV debate is a groundswell of opinion among a large, and growing, and connected, segment of the population that the Lib Dems are the vehicle of change at this election.

A vote for Gordon Brown or David Cameron is a vote for the same old politics, the same old self re-inforcing status quo.

None of us yet knows for sure what’s happening in this election campaign. The last few days may prove to be illusory. But they may mark a deeper shift in public opinion: a sense that something has to change in British politics, that the system needs to be given a good shake. And it’s that mood which the Lib Dems have captured.

If the opinion polls we’re seeing at the moment materialise at the only-poll-that-counts on 6th May who knows what will happen? All we know is that politics will never be quite the same again. And that, I think, is the point.

And that’s why at the end of typing this brief post now numbers 103,225 members.

  • Do we think RATM would be happy about being used to promote neo-libs number 3?

  • Mark Inskip 19th Apr '10 - 7:18pm

    Now 104,001 members…

  • Mike, are you talking about the three Irish Green Party candidates standing for Westminster?

  • One startling feature of this GE (and this is my 8th as a Lib/Lib Dem) is the volume of enquiries and expressions of support coming electronically – and their skewing toward younger voters.

Not sure what it signifies, but it’s b****y good fun!

  • Current rate of growth is about 1000 per hour… clocked at over 106,000 now…. – what are we calling it, the golden revolution??

  • Tom Papworth 20th Apr '10 - 2:22pm

    113,000 and counting.

It must have been something you said, Stephen!

  • Kris Puri (ARD Television) 22nd Jun '10 - 3:45pm

We are currently doing a news piece about the reaction of ordinary Lib Dem supporters to the Budget in particular (and the coalition government in general), for ARD news in Germany. We’d love to interview Lib Dem supporters based in London – interviews would have to be done within the next couple of hours (I know, very short notice). If you know of anyone who’d be happy to be interviewed, you can contact me on 020 7391 6264. Thanks !
