Teacher numbers in STEM subjects fall by 900

Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Willie Rennie MSP has accused the SNP of “playing fast and loose” with Scotland’s economic future, as new figures revealed there are 900 fewer teachers in STEM subjects than when the SNP first came to power

New figures show that between 2008 and 2025:

  • The number of maths teachers fell by 361.
  • The number of computing teachers fell by 243.
  • The number of physics teachers fell by 108.
  • The number of technical education teachers fell by 188.

Willie Rennie said:

The SNP have played fast and loose with Scotland’s economic future by presiding over a worrying decline in key STEM subjects.

Pupils are missing out on hundreds of teachers who are needed to inspire them, lift attainment and propel them towards high-skill, high-pay jobs.

If nothing is done to fix this, these gaps could ripple for generations to come.

Scottish Liberal Democrats want to throw the weight and levers of government behind key industries like life sciences, defence and energy, and to attract more people into teaching, including those who are in the later stages of their careers.

If you like the sound of that, you should back the Scottish Liberal Democrats on your second, peach, regional ballot paper in May.

606 fewer modern language teachers than when SNP came to power

Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Willie Rennie MSP has today said that only his party have got a realistic plan to get Scottish education back to its best, as he revealed that there are now 606 fewer French and German teachers than when the SNP first came to power.

New figures reveal that between 2008 and 2025:

  • The number of French teachers fell by 487.
  • The number of German teachers fell by 119.

Willie Rennie said:

The SNP have jeopardised language learning by allowing these numbers to plummet. Subjects like French and German have been squeezed by reforms to the curriculum.

Being able to speak another language opens so many doors in life, which is why these figures represent such a loss.

Fewer teachers in subjects like French and German risks a closing down of opportunities for young people.

Scottish Liberal Democrats have a positive, outward-looking vision for Scotland where children can develop the essential skills offered by languages.

If you want to get Scottish education back to its best, you should back the Scottish Liberal Democrats on your second, peach, regional ballot paper in May.

Greens scrapping road projects will kill Highland communities

Responding to the news that the Scottish Greens would scrap road building projects, Scottish Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Inverness and Nairn Neil Alexander said:

The Scottish Greens are exposing their complete ignorance about the Highlands.

By scrapping vital upgrades to lifeline roads like the A9 and A96, the Scottish Greens would effectively let devastating levels of fatalities and accidents persist.

Their thoughtless plans could also lead to a further reduction in bus services, with operator Stagecoach already reducing Highland routes as a result of poor roads.

The Highlands deserve grown-up politics, with real, meaningful action and change for our communities.

Scottish Liberal Democrats will deliver change with fairness at its heart by dualling dangerous roads like the A9, as well as exploring new train stations and lines in areas that suffer from poor public transport links.

Greene: Calamity Kemi should apologise for cheerleading Iran War which is sending prices soaring

Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP Jamie Greene has today said that Kem Badenoch should use her visit to Scotland today to apologise for cheerleading US and Israeli strikes on Iran which have sent global energy prices soaring.

On March 2nd she declared: “The Conservative Party stands behind America, taking this necessary action against state-sponsored terror”.

Mr Greene said:

Rather than cheerleading for Donald Trump, Kemi Badenoch should be using her visit to Scotland to apologise to all the households who are seeing their bills soar.

As soon as Trump started bombing, Calamity Kemi leapt in to say what a brilliant idea it was. It’s like she learned nothing from Iraq. Her judgment is terrible.

If you’re a former Conservative voter who is tired of being led into long and expensive in wars in the Middle East, you should back Scottish Liberal Democrats on your peach regional ballot.

If you’ve been to A&E, you shouldn’t trust Swinney

Responding to John Swinney’s misguided claims about the SNP’s record on health, Liberal Democrat Scottish affairs spokesperson Susan Murray MP said:

If you’ve been to an accident and emergency in Scotland in the last few years, you will know not to trust a word that comes out of John Swinney’s mouth on the NHS.

From A&Es to cancer waiting times to the erosion of NHS dentistry – wherever you look in our health service- you will find decay.

We’ve been waiting for a new health and care centre in Strathkelvin and Bearsden for years.

Only the Scottish Liberal Democrats have got a realistic plan to get everyone the first-rate healthcare they need when they need it, and you can set those plans into motion by backing us on both ballot papers in May.

  • As a resident of Scotland I’m told “only the Scottish Liberal Democrat’s have got a realistic plan to get everyone the first-rate healthcare they need”. I’m also told there are ten Lib Dem target seats. It would help if the realistic plan was spelt out in detail (which it is not), and given only ten target seats, how the Lib Dem’s intend to implement it and to cost it with just a handful of MSPs.

As for NHS dentistry, the official figure for England reveals over 12 million adults have no access to NHS dentistry – two and a half times the entire population of Scotland.

I do so wish politicians in all and every party, including the Lib Dem’s, would exercise a bit of rigour and candour and treat the electorate with a bit of grown up respect if they expect us to turn out and vote for them.
