Paddy speaks out on vetoed Afghan role

Here’s the text of the statement Paddy Ashdown issued yesterday, following news that Afghanistan’s government and its President, Hamid Karzai, had rejected the idea the former Lib Dem leader should become the UN’s special envoy:

Last night I informed the Secretary-General of the United Nations that I am withdrawing my name from consideration for the post of Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan.

I strongly believe that there is an urgent need for proper co-ordination of the international effort on the ground in Afghanistan if that effort – in which so much is being invested, and which is so vital

Tories lose control in Basingstoke

Hampshire News brings us the glad tidings:

The Conservatives lost overall control of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council last night after the Liberal Democrats won the Baughurst by-election.

Liberal Democrat Michael Bound secured 428 votes to beat Tory Zoe Wheddon, who polled 368 votes. The turnout was 41 per cent.

The by-election was called after the death of sitting Conservative councillor Sheila Allen, in September.

The result wiped out the Conservatives’ majority, leaving them with half the 60 council seats. The Liberal Democrats now have 16 councillors, while the Labour group retains 11 and the independents three.

This is the latest good result for …

Lib Dems save haggis

News reached the Voice yesterday that nine Lib Dem MPs have signed an EDM supporting haggis, which brings over £1m into the Scottish economy, particularly in the run up to Burns Night.

The future of the haggis has been jeopardised by the withdrawal of funding currently used to train workers in the meat industry. Leading haggis producers consider there to be a shortage of the skilled workers necessary for ongoing haggis production.

You can find the EDM itself here, and the BBC report about it here.

The London mayoral campaign’s getting interesting

It’s been a big day in London mayoral politics. Tonight’s Channel 4 Dispatches programme, presented by the New Statesman’s Martin Bright, has levelled a number of serious allegations against Ken Livingstone, detailed here in The Guardian.

The most potentially damaging – if true – are that:
– the Mayor’s former senior adviser on Asian issues, Atma Singh, admits that while employed by the Greater London Authority with a salary paid for by taxpayers he and other mayoral advisers raised large sums of money for Ken’s 2004 re-election bid: a clear breach of local government rules barring local authority employees from working on political campaigns during office hours; and
– that many of the Mayor’s senior advisers were appointed not on their own merit, but because they are members of a Trotskyite faction called Socialist Action, plotting to turn London into a “socialist city state”.

Dispatches also examined Ken’s relationship with the Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez; questioned the impact today of the congestion charge; and scrutinised Mayoral expenses run up on a trip to India.

So far, Ken’s defence has been weak, brushing aside Dispatches’ allegations by claiming the programme is a hatchet job. If it’d been made by Peter Hitchens fair enough: but Ken’ll have a harder job arguing that Martin Bright of the anti-war Statesman is part of a capitalist / Evening Standard / Channel 4 conspiracy. The Mayor’s lazy, broadbrush response has been of a piece with Ken’s campaign so far: tired, petulant and backward-looking.

Did you see Dispatches? What did you think of the programme?

Government nationalises Northern Rock but privatises the profits

Press release from the party:

GOVERNMENT HAS NATIONALISED NORTHERN ROCK BUT PRIVATISED THE PROFITS – CABLE

Commenting on Alistair Darling’s statement to Parliament today on the Northern Rock crisis, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor Vince Cable said:

“It is particularly ironic that the Prime Minister felt the need to fly to a communist country to come up with a supposedly private sector solution for Northern Rock.

“The reality is the Government has ingeniously come up with a private sector sale that doesn’t involve any private sector money.

“In order to save face Brown has decided that losses of Northern Rock should be nationalised, but that profits …

Feat. Brian Paddick – preview of new London party tabloid

The Lib Dems’ Brian Paddick today launched his campaign to be elected Mayor of London – and the party has just taken delivery of its latest London-wide tabloid, designed to support his bid and the campaigns of the party’s GLA candidates. Want a sneak preview? You can download a PDF version here.

Paddick launches Mayoral campaign

Speaking at the launch of his Mayoral Campaign in Brixton Town Hall, Liberal Democrat Mayoral Candidate Brian Paddick pledged to put cutting crime in London at the heart of his bid to win the mayoral race.

Brian Paddick was accompanied by Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg as he outlined his key priorities for London: cutting crime by 20% during first term or stand down, chairing the Metropolitan Police Authority to hold the Metropolitan Police Service to account for its performance in reducing crime, increasing reliability of Tube and Bus, changing Oystercard to enable unlimited travel within 1 hour and using money spent on temporary accommodation to build new permanent ‘social housing.’

A new website has been launched at www.brianpaddick.org

Paddick said, “I have a track record of performance against Londoners’ number one concern: crime. Ken Livingstone has said he cannot do anything about gun and knife crime. I will make tackling crime in the capital a priority. I will cut crime in London by 5% every year over the course of my first term in City Hall. If I fail to reach my target after four years, I will not stand again.”

This is our uncritical cut’n’paste of an official launch mailing. We’re sure our readers will be critical in the comments below.

Labour MP Emily Thornberry in trouble… again

Islington South & Finsbury Labour MP Emily Thornberry is an old friend of LDV – we noted her hypocrisy here (September) and her ticking off by the Parliament’s standards watchdog here (October).

Now Ms Thornberry is in trouble again – this time for using taxpayers’ money to send out unsolicited letters to residents on Parliamentary stationery using pre-paid envelopes. She is being forced by the Serjeant-at-Arms to pay back the money she illegitimately spent in the run-up to the 2007 election-that-never-was. As the MP sent out at least 10,400 letters with first-class postage, she could face a bill of …

Clegg’s first PMQs (UPDATED)

Prime Minister’s Questions has just started. Use this thread to post up your comments…

Brown and Cameron play the ID cards shuffle: Brown is in favour, but Cameron quotes Darling having been against them; Cameron is against, but Brown quotes one of his Shadow Cabinet (Pauline Neville-Jones) having been for them. No prizes for guessing which is the party that can claim consistent opposition.

Clegg goes on fuel prices. He’s in a different place from that used by Campbell – sitting two places further in, so that he is surrounded by Liberal Democrat MPs.

His choice of a bread and butter issue ties …

Nick Clegg has just announced that the party’s Chief Executive Chris Rennard has been reappointed as Chair of the General Election Campaign for the Liberal Democrats. Lord Rennard had previously been given the role by Ming Campbell.

Andrew Stunell is chair of the local election campaign. The party’s press release also mentions Willie Rennie’s new position as Chair of Parliamentary Campaigns and Ed Davey’s continued role as Chair of the Campaigns and Communications Committee.

Vote on the Liberal Voice of 2007

Lib Dem Voice’s poll for Liberal Voice of 2007 opens today. We’re asking you to vote on who your favourite public champion for liberal values in Britain was over the last year. What ‘liberal’ means is up to you to decide in the vote.

There’s a twist to the contest, too. While we are all likely to judge the Liberal Democrats and its parliamentarians are the best champions, we decided to make things different. We’ve picked a shortlist of people outside the Lib Dems, mainly with the intention to spark some debate on which non-party or rival party figures are …

Help make The Voice even bigger and better in 2009

2008 has been a tremendously successful year for Liberal Democrat Voice, with more readers, more content and more comments than ever. But we want to be even bigger and better in 2009.

You’ll have seen some of our plans already, including the introduction of new regular features such as James Graham’s weekly Lib Dig Pig round-ups (covering the best of the internet beyond the Liberal Democrat blogosphere).

We also want to expand our online advertising and our presence at party events so that we can reach out to that wider pool of people who are interested in the sorts of stories we …

Nick Clegg’s new media spokesperson

The Independent has a story today on Hannah Gardiner taking over from Puja Darbari.

Amongst her other skills, Puja was always very helpful to bloggers seeking interviews with Ming – thank you Puja.

Hannah is the head of the party’s media operation, so this news sounds as if one integrated media operation is planned, rather than complementary party and leader’s office media operations.

Jasper Gerard makes fun of Simon Jenkins

Sunday’s Observer brings an amusing tirade from Jasper Gerard, directed at Simon Jenkins – or rather Simon’s tendency to get rather worked up about the Liberal Democrats. As Gerard writes:

I enjoy a glow of familiarity whenever I read an article by Simon Jenkins on the Liberal Democrats. So last week, he dismissed Nick Clegg, their new leader, much as he had dismissed Ming Campbell and, for all anyone can remember, Archibald Sinclair and Lloyd George…

In all its essentials, the article is the same every year, explaining why Lib Dems are not worth writing about. Sometimes, it proves necessary to

Posted on their behalf:

The Liberal Democrat History Group is looking for a volunteer to help with editorial work on the group’s web site.

The Group promotes the discussion and research of the histories of the Liberal Democrats, Liberal Party and SDP, and of Liberalism. We do this through meetings, our quarterly Journal of Liberal History, occasional books and our web site.

A triple dose of Nick Clegg in the media (updated)

Let’s hope Nick Clegg got all his Christmas shopping finished before he was elected leader, because he looks just a mite busy getting lots of media coverage at the moment.

This morning, he was on Radio 4′ s Today in the coveted 8:10am slot (listen again here for up to seven days or read about it here), whilst The Voice hears that there are interviews set to appear in the Sunday Times (on … Sunday) and then Monday’s Daily Telegraph.

UPDATE: Make that a quadruple dose: he is also in the news over the latest Al Yamamah revelations.

Conservative councillor sacked after accusing council of corruption

It’s happened in the London Borough of Sutton:

A Cheam councillor has been disqualified for a year after being found guilty of breaching the councillors’ code of conduct.

Eleanor Pinfold was stripped of her title today after a councillors’ watchdog found she had used brash and offensive language when communicating with council officers and Sutton Police.

She was also found to have brought the council into disrepute by claiming its planning department was corrupt…

Supt Shadbolt made a complaint about her after she had also accused him of being politically biased towards the Liberal Democrats and of skewing crime figures.

Who’s Who in Team Clegg

At least according to today’s Telegraph:

The key man in Nick Clegg’s inner circle is Danny Alexander, who was elected to Parliament with him in 2005. Mr Alexander, 35, is a former PR executive who is now Mr Clegg’s chief of staff and will be responsible for drawing up the party’s election manifesto. Married with one daughter, his hobbies include fishing and hill-walking.

Although Mr Clegg is still putting the finishing touches to his top team, other key figures will include Polly MacKenzie, his former home affairs policy adviser and Euan Roddin, Sir Menzies Campbell’s former speech writer. They will be

Hilary Stephenson, the party’s Director of Campaigns and Elections has been in touch with The Voice to express her satisfaction with the way the party has been welcoming its new leader.

Yesterday and today Lib Dems have been busy across the country handing out fliers introducing our new leader Nick Clegg. The first went out just a
