Help shape party policy online

One of the features of our party’s policy is the amount of consultation that goes into preparing it.

Every party member has the opportunity to feed in their views before proposals are drawn up for taking to Conference. This has always included publishing a consultation paper before every new policy paper, and consultative sessions are held at party conference and often elsewhere too.

But over the last year we’ve moved consultation into the electronic world too – so each working group now has its own site where any party member can comment or contribute.

So the two new consultative papers that the party has recently unveiled are now online: on future policy on Europe, and on Further & Higher Education. In each of these areas a working group is working towards bringing a policy paper to conference, either in spring (FE/HE), or at autumn next year (Europe).

End of the road for Tory’s FOI dilution bill?

The Press Gazette reports:

A controversial attempt to exempt MPs from the Freedom of Information Act faces possible collapse today due to lack of support in the House of Lords.
Tory MP David Maclean has until the end of today’s proceedings to find a peer willing to sponsor his Private Members’ Bill in the upper chamber.
Opponents of the measure said that if no one comes forward by then, the Bill will effectively die due to lack of parliamentary time.

The article quotes Lib Dem peer, Lord (Tom) McNally:

“I think it would be better for the reputation of both Houses if this bill

Liberal Democrats step up FoI campaign

Adverts have been appearing across the Internet in the last few days to supplement the party’s campaigning against the attempts by Conservative and Labour MPs to exempt Parliament from the Freedom of Information Act.

If you want to add the advert to your own site, just download the above graphic and link it through to www.ourcampaign.org.uk/foi

There’s also a larger advert – especially for those who say “no, no, no – this isn’t a Tory and Labour measure” – after the Read more link.

American Presidential campaigns scramble to catch up with us

They might not be aware of it, but all the fuss in the US about candidates using RSS feeds to let people know about forthcoming events looks rather old hat from over this side of the Atlantic. It’s the sort of thing that Flock Together has been doing for really quite a long time now … do keep up at the back!

How not to send an email

Harriet Harman’s campaign for Labour Deputy Leader doesn’t really seem to be at the cutting edge of technology: sending out an email to several hundred councillors and sticking all their addresses in the to/cc fields is just asking for an unhappy recipient to hit “reply all” … and indeed they did.

(It’s also highly questionable data protection practice to expose people’s personal data – their email addresses – to all and sundry in this way. Rather ironic for a leading Labour figure to be so slapdash with personal data when Labour is so keen on getting the government to gather up …

Corruption is a crime

The story of how Labour axed criminal investigations into bribery over the UK’s big arms deal with Saudi Arabia has been a favourite of various Lib Dem blogs (including this one), particularly given the rather curious continued silence from the Tories on the issue. (Tough on crime? Err, only sometimes, when it suits, if it’s not too much bother and when we’ve finished changing our clothes.)

The party’s now launched a new online petition and campaign website on the subject: www.corruptionisacrime.com

It’s one of a series of initiatives over the next few weeks backing up the party’s major crime campaign, …

The Metro newspaper is running these and nominations are now open on their website.

How’s your writing?

The party is updating and expanding its set of two sides of A4 introductory guides on various aspects of e-campaigning. Many of the best ones so far have been written by volunteers (thanks Pete!) – so I’m on the hunt for volunteers again…

The new guides will include:

  • Getting started with blogging (using Blogger)
  • Using Flock Together to advertise meetings, events and resouces
  • Using Flock Together to find out about meetings, events and resouces near you
  • Using Facebook

If you fancy writing (or laying out) any of these, or have any suggestions for other guides needed, just drop me an email at [email protected].

Lib Dem MPs flock to Facebook

There’s been a flurry of Liberal Democrat MPs starting to use the social networking site Facebook in the last few weeks – including party leader Ming Campbell (the first UK party leader to do so, just as he was the first on Google Video and YouTube), Jo Swinson, Steve Webb, Stephen Williams and Lynne Featherstone.

Facebook used to only be open to students – and so there is a strong Lib Dem Youth and Student presence on it – but has recently been opened up to anyone.

If you are a Facebook user yourself or you …

The five blogs nicest to the Lib Dems

Based on the amount of traffic they’ve passed on to www.libdems.org.uk in the second half of 2006, the top five blogs were:

  1. Guido Fawkes
  2. Iain Dale
  3. Lynne Featherstone
  4. Ming Campbell
  5. Recess Monkey

No dog or elephant, but at least there’s a red monkey. Somehow I suspect some of them might quibble with the “nicest to the Lib Dems” accolade 🙂 – but thanks for the traffic anyway.

The top five local Liberal Democrat websites

Based on the amount of traffic they’ve passed on to www.libdems.org.uk in the second half of 2006, the top five local Liberal Democrat sites were:

  1. brentlibdems.org.uk
  2. northamptonlibdems.org.uk
  3. eastsurreylibdems.org.uk
  4. bristolwest-libdems.org.uk
  5. rochdalelibdems.org.uk

Quite a decent geographic spread, although all in England. Having two parties without a Lib Dem MP in there is a promising sign of the use of the internet across the party (though perhaps not for the incumbent MPs in those two areas!). Make of it all what you will.

Opinion: Federal election rules could be in danger of making a mockery of our party’s democratic processes

Ballot paperNick Clegg, speaking on Internet TV station 18 Doughty Street recently described our party as “painfully democratic” – he meant no malice or mischief by the claim, but it was a pithy, and accurate, summary of a key point about Liberal Democrat decision making. Every so often we keep the party’s democracy alive by distributing ballot papers to an electoral college of thousands of voting representatives (who are in turn elected by their local parties) at great expense. When it comes to being democratic, despite the cost, we practice what we preach.

During the latest round of elections to national party committees such as the Federal Policy Committee and the Federal Conference Committee, Liberal Democrat Voice received helpful assistance from election officials Lord Rennard and David Allworthy – their help enabled us to publish a full list of candidates as soon as it became available. This was, so far as I know, the first time a full list of federal election candidates was published online, free to access, allowing non-voting representatives (who do not receive copies of ballot papers and manifestos) to see who was standing for positions of influence in the Liberal Democrats. Alas, having seen that information, they then had no place to comment – in fact, the election rules forbade it.

All being well there are now two years until the next set of elections, and while the last lot is still fresh in our memories we should have a rational debate about the conditions under which the next is fought.

New Tory Labour: delivering promises

New Tory Labour Following up on the New Tory Labour animation about climate change, the Lib Dems have today released another Tim Ireland animation – this time about transport.

Clegg and Huhne strut their webcasting stuff

This week we’ve added mini-movies from Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne to, respectively, the party’s anti-DNA database campaigning website and our No to Nuclear campaign site.

The DNA site also now links to an article from Lynne Featherstone giving the answer to “what does an innocent person have to fear from DNA databases?” – which is probably the most common query about our campaign. Needless to say, she gives a good answer!

PS And don’t forget, you can still watch the party’s latest Climate Change film too.

WebCameron.. well it’s… different

WebcameronVia Paul Walter comes news of the arrival of WebCameron. Initially like a party political broadcast – but with the twist no-one thought of before… add a screaming kid in to the mix.

It’s all very Conservative Party meets “web 2.0” – embedded video, gradient graphics… and not a hint of blue or a tree in sight. This is, we are to believe, David’s “personal” blog.

It’s also at the moment very broken, and taking an age to load.

Whether it is a success or not, only time will tell. But clearly the  …
