PPC update: Birmingham Hodge Hill

Colin RossIt seems the last PPC update was written while Colin Ross was still updating his site, so we missed the selection of our first BME candidate in the current round – in Birmingham Hodge Hill.

Congratulations to Cllr Tariq Khan, who has been selected for this “moving forward” status seat. As Colin says “At the May 2005 General Election Birmingham Hodge Hill saw a massive swing from Labour of 18.3%, and should be regarded as one of the seats the Liberal Democrats should pick up from Labour at the next …

More PPCs selected – and should Lib Dem Voice carry PPC ads?

Congratulations to the three selected candidates in Newcastle, promising new Lib Dem territory thanks to recent great local election results:

  • Newcastle Central – Gareth Kane
  • Newcastle East – Stephen Psallidas
  • Newcastle North – Ron Beadle

These selections, plus Winchester and Woking appear in the updated PPC list.

Now a question – I haven’t yet posted up last week’s PPC ads, and no-one has complained. Is that information useful, or should LDV carry only news of seats that have selected?

Update: True to form, Martin Tod is off to a flying start with the launch of www.winningwinchester.com!

Also congratulations to Cllr Rosie Sharpley, selected as the PPC for Woking. Rosie has been a Woking councillor for 18 years and is currently a member of the Lib Dem exec running Woking Borough Council.

Aspiring MEPs should start training now

It has been confirmed by the English Council that the English Regions will select their European Parliamentary candidates between June and November next year, with the intention of giving candidates a clear eighteen months to campaign once selected.

The English Candidates Committee is encouraging anyone thinking of applying to seek approval, if required, as early as possible to prevent any repeat of the last European selection, when some applicants were going through the approval process at the same time as interviews were taking place.

Those on the Westminster approved list not already approved for Europe will require successful completion of a “policy …

Independent calls on Lib Dems to stand aside in Bedford

A dermatologist from Bedford hospital who wishes to emulate the success of independent Wyre Forest MP Richard Taylor is calling on the Liberal Democrats not to front a candidate at the next General Election.

Bedford NHS Trust is £12m in debt, and has recently announced more than 120 job cuts.

Dr Barry Monk has written to the Conservatives and to the Lib Dems to request a “clear run” against Patrick Hall, the sitting Labour MP. His majority is 3383.

Target seats at risk due to shortage of party officials?

Lib Dem Voice has received a couple of e-mails from seats in England who are worried they may miss out on ‘target’ status in the next General Election, as they are unable to select candidates by the end of this year due to a lack of trained officials.

I’m conducting a mini-investigation to identify the scale of the problem.  If you’re in a seat (target or not) that is having difficulty selecting a candidate due to a shortage of trained selection committee members, Returning Officers, or any other post, please e-mail me.
