… We’d say a big thank you to the 61,584 ‘absolute unique visitors’* who read Liberal Democrat Voice in September.

That’s almost 30% up on our August figure of c.48,000, and more than treble the equivalent figure for September ’09 of c.20,000.

This brings our absolute unique visitor readership for the last year to date (1 Oct 2009 – 30 Sept 2010) to 698,430, more than double the equivalent figure for 2008-09 of 344,608.

Blessings and Challenges from a day on Lib Dem Voice

Well, that’s it then. First lesson to anyone else thinking of following Mark and me in guest editing LDV – it’s not really the day you are doing it you need to take off… it’s the day before!

Ideally you need to have your contributions done and dusted the night before. In my case, so close to conference, yesterday was what you might call a challenge. I had a normal day at work, extended because I had been out of the office for nearly a week.

I had then booked to meet fellow Tweeps for a #tweetup, thinking I wouldn’t …

Lib Dem Voice comments policy for internal party elections

A site housekeeping notice follows…

Liberal Democrat Voice is an independent website, and therefore is not bound by the rules governing the party’s selections.

However, we are happy voluntarily to operate our editorial policy in the spirit of selection rules adopted by the party.

Where those rules ban endorsements generally any comments that would infringe these rules will be withdrawn (eg, a comment saying “I’ll be voting for Herbie Asquith”, or “Don’t vote for Bill Gladstone; he supports chopping down trees”).

However, where endorsements are permited, either generally or outside of the formal manifestoes, we will allow such comments as long as they …

Call for contributors: day of multilingual blogging

A long time ago, I did a degree in modern languages. To try and keep my skills from fading, I follow a few French and German language users on Twitter. And one of these, the French-speaking arm of the FCO let me know a few weeks ago of a planned event at the end of September.

The UK arm of the European Commission is hoping to celebrate European Day of Languages with a day of multi-lingual blogging. The date is 26th September, and you can read all about it on the EC Facebook page for the

Guest editors on The Voice

Many thanks to Mark Valladares, who this week was the first in a series of guest editors. They will be running this site for a day each over the next few months.

As Mark demonstrated so well, having a guest editor can give the site something new; in his case a very pertinent theme for the day and a range of new contributors.

If anyone else would like to be a guest editor for the day, please drop an email to [email protected] with some details of your blogging or editing experience.

Mark Valladares’s day as guest editor

Today’s guest editor, in his own words…

When the inestimable Mark Pack wrote to a number of bloggers looking for volunteers to guest edit Liberal Democrat Voice for a day, there was an initial chorus of ‘sounds interesting, get back to me when I’m sober’. My response was:

I, on the other hand, am sober. Sober enough to realise that Mark’s offer might not suit my particular skill set. Unless, of course, you want a day enriched by constitutional and organisational minutiae…

Back came the response;

“Thanks for offering to guest edit Lib Dem Voice for a day. Would a day in the week of Sat 17 July – …

LDV doesn’t do statporn, but if we did (June ’10)

… We’d say a big thank you to the 49,916 ‘absolute unique visitors’* who read Liberal Democrat Voice in June.

Though that’s way down on our May 2010 figure of c.136,000, that was an exceptional month – with a general election plus the formation of the new coalition government. In fact, compared with June 2009, Lib Dem Voice’s readership is up by one-third.

This brings our absolute unique visitor readership for the last year to date (1 July 2009 – 30 June 2010) to 582,154, over 80% higher than the equivalent figure for 2008-09 of 322,654.

LDV doesn’t do statporn, but if we did (May ’10)

… We’d say a big thank you to the 136,557 ‘absolute unique visitors’* who read Liberal Democrat Voice in May.

That’s over 20% higher compared to our April 2010 figure of c.112,000, and we are up some 227% on the equivalent figure for May ’09. Anyone would think there had just been a general election. In fact, the site passed 100,000 unique visitors by 14 May … which suggests traffic has stabilised since at c.2,500 absolute uniques a day.

This brings our absolute unique visitor readership for the last year to date (1 June 2009 – 31 May 2010) to 503,653, over 87% higher than the equivalent figure for 2008-09 of 268,359.

Communicate with your members

Just a very quick note to ask local party officers to make sure they are planning some urgent communication with members.

One of the tangible benefits of Cleggmania was a surge in membership and support across the country, so many local parties now have significantly more members than they did before the election. For many of these people, this will be the first members’ newsletter they receive, so do please design your communication with this in mind.

For those of you who are preparing a newsletter, Lib Dem Voice has a regular newsletter insert. The General Election special is …
