Guest editor today – Paul Walter

Astonishingly the editorial team have seen fit to vacate the LDV control tower and let me guest edit the website for another day. Power! Last time, I contacted mainly old LibDem friends who I’ve worked alongside over the years, and got them to write some fascinating posts. Having now exhausted my slim LibDem “Roladex” of contacts, I took a different approach this time. I randomly approached a number of keen LibDem bloggers and asked them to write a post on any subject. To my pleasant surprise, they responded very …

How you can help Liberal Democrat Voice

The Voice is only a success because of the interest and support from our readers. For many people just lurking and reading the site is all they want to do – and that’s fine, we’re grateful for people taking the time to read the site.

You can though help us continue to produce interesting content for a growing audience. Here are four simple ways:

1. Let us have your tips for stories. Perhaps there’s something outrageous going on in your local council? Or you’re an expert in a particular area and have spotted a story other people have missed? Or you’ve seen …

LDV doesn’t do statporn, but if we did (March 2011)

… We’d say a big thank you to the 52,224 ‘absolute unique visitors’* who read Liberal Democrat Voice in March.

It’s three months since last the Voice indulged in our statporn, so here’s 2011 figures so far: January (44,998) and February (40,206). This brings our absolute unique visitor readership for the last year to date (1 April 2010 – 31 March 2011) to 766,283, almost double the equivalent figure for 2009-10 of 395,014.

Incidentally, if you’re wondering why we publish our readership figures — is it show-off vanity, or pedantic statophilia? — I came up with a few reasons at …

Welcome to Nick Thornsby

A very warm welcome to Nick Thornsby, who has started helping out on The Voice this week with our LibLink postings. These highlight articles which have appeared elsewhere from Liberal Democrats, particularly opinion pieces in the mainstream newspapers.

Thank you Nick, and if any readers spot an article that should be LibLinked which we haven’t yet picked up on, do get in touch.

Nick’s own blog is at nickthornsby.wordpress.com, which is also well worth a read as it has continued going strong since the Phil Woolas court case, when it was an essential source of information.

The Voice’s Alex Foster to feature on tonight’s Channel 4 Come Dine With Me

Long-time contributing editor to Lib Dem Voice, Alex Foster, is cooking up a storm on this week’s Come Dine With Me, the hit Channel 4 gourmet gameshow. And tonight, Tuesday, at 5pm is when viewers will be able to view his cooking episode, which is trailed thusly:

In Nottingham, local councillor Alex Foster hopes to impress with a fancy French menu and a spot of bell ringing. Sadly, Brian likens Alex’s starter to cat food, Janice tells him to tidy up his house, and Barry compares the cornichons to intimate body parts.

Which must surely count as must-watch telly, yes?

Helen Duffett appointed Internal Communications Manager for Lib Dems

Helen Duffett — Lib Dem blogger, tweeter, and much-loved member of Lib Dem Voice’s editorial collective — started today as the party’s new Internal Communications Manager. All of us at the Voice wish her the very best in this vital role.

We are delighted that Helen has agreed to continue to fulfil the role of contributing editor, and look forward to her remaining a full member of the team here at LDV Towers.

LDV doesn’t do statporn, but if we did (December ’10)

… We’d say a big thank you to the 51,153 ‘absolute unique visitors’* who read Liberal Democrat Voice in December.

That’s a notch down on our November figure of c.59,000, but almost double the equivalent figure for December ’09 of c.27,000.

Incidentally, if you’re wondering why we publish our readership figures — is it show-off vanity, or pedantic statophilia — I came up with a few reasons at the start of last year. The arguments still stack up, I think.

The 5 top-read stories during the month were:

Lib Dem Voice: 2010 in stats

Happy New Year and thankyou to all our readers!

Here are a few statistics which sum up the past year on LDV:

384 authors have written a total of 3239 posts. (For more on how to write for us, click here.)

Readers have visited our site 1,473,760 times, making 3,140,977 pageviews.

Our busiest day was Friday 7th May, the day after the General Election. This is typical for political websites the day after an election, and a reminder to defer that lie-in until after you’ve updated your site with results and commentary. The surge in readers the day after Polling Day is often greater than the steady trickle who’ve been visiting a site during an election campaign.

Our new year signing: Mark Valladares

In the new year Mark Valladares, of Liberal Bureaucracy and a sometime contributor to this site, will be starting up a regular fortnightly guest piece for The Voice concentrating on letting members know what party bodies are getting up to in their name and how they can influence their decisions.

If there’s any particular topic you’d like Mark to cover, just pop up a comment below…

Thanks for reading

Thanks very much to the Liberal Democrat Voice team for giving me the privilege of guest editing the site today. It was a huge pleasure to be able to contact LibDem friends I greatly admire, and then receive back articles which were of high quality and fascinating in equal measure. So many thanks to David B, Duncan, Katy, Mary, Sue, David R, Colin and Gerald for writing such wonderful articles so promptly and to Mark for posting them up and generally advising.

Paul Walter to guest edit Liberal Democrat Voice tomorrow

Tomorrow we’ve got our fourth guest editor running the site for a day, Newbury blogger Paul Walter. He follows Caron LindsayMark Valladares and Linda Jack.

Paul’s got a great set of guest posts lined up already, so do pop back tomorrow to take a read.

This is the last of our little run of experiments with guest editors so if you’ve got any views on how it has gone and whether we should do something similar in future, please comment below.

Administrative note: check before submitting a tuition fees article

We’ve received more articles for publication on the topic of tuition fees than on any other single topic for a long time. Those not already published will be coming over the next few days.

Due to this high volume, we can’t commit to publish all new articles submitted on the subject.

If you’re thinking of writing an article for Lib Dem Voice on tuition fees, please drop us an email first ([email protected]) with an brief outline to avoid disappointment.

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodnight

So, 13 hours after it began, my day as guest editor comes to an end. I’ve loved it but I am so, so tired. I think it’s going to take me a week to recover.

I’ve always admired the Voice Team but am now even more convinced than ever that whenever you see Alex Foster, Sara Bedford, Helen Duffett, Mark Pack, Stephen Tall and Iain Roberts, not forgetting Ryan Cullen for his technical wizardry, you should offer them food, alcohol, cuddles or all three. They do this every day. Blimey!

I want to say a huge thank you to lots of lovely …

Presidential prospects, passionate debate and poll confidence – a day of inspiration, optimism and hope

Mark Valladares, who was the first guest editor to be let loose on this hallowed site, was sober at the time he agreed to it. I can’t say the same, but if Dr Pack will insist on asking for volunteers very late on a Friday night, then he probably deserves everything he gets.

When Mark offered me a day this week, its proximity to our first Scottish Conference was too opportune to turn down.

Normally Autumn Scottish Conference is an earnest but modest gathering. This year’s was keenly anticipated, though. How would we adjust to being part of a Westminster Government with …

Caron Lindsay to guest edit Liberal Democrat Voice tomorrow

Tomorrow we’ve got a new guest editor running the site for a day, Scottish Lib Dem blogger Caron Lindsay. She’s the third in our series of guest editors, following Mark Valladares and Linda Jack.

I’m really looking forward to reading the posts Caron’s already talked about having ready to publish. Do come back tomorrow and see how Caron adds a different perspective and touch from the usual on here.

We have a couple more guest slots lined up later this year already but if anyone else would like to be a guest editor for the day, please drop an …

Congratulations to Alex Foster from all at Lib Dem Voice

All of us at Lib Dem Voice join in wishing our colleague, Alex Foster, the very best on his wedding day. May it be everything you both want, and more, Alex.

Alex is one of the founding members of the Voice collective: you can read his first post on his love-hate relationship with Lib Dem conferences (from September 2006) here; and all his other posts for the Voice here.

And if you want to be uplifted while shedding a tear, can I recommend the post he published this week over …
