9 May is Europe Day.
The date was chosen because it is the anniversary of the military victory of the democratic Allies over fascism in Europe in 1945 and, in 1950, the date of the Schuman Declaration in which Robert Schuman, French foreign minister, called for a Coal and Steel Community to promote peace and prosperity.
The best way to celebrate Europe Day is to help the Liberal Democrats’ INTogether campaign.

Eurosceptic Tory MP Liam Fox recognised on BBC2 Newsnight on 9/5/2016 that the EU did a good job in helping Spain, Portugal and Greece into democracy from their dictatorships and others from communism. He did not mention German re-unification specifically. That is why the last movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is played. The Germans paid for 400,000 Soviet troops to be rehoused, in Russia, and transported by sea, not overland through Poland.
In the UK we are so accustomed to EU member states being democracies that we misunderstand our neighbours who have had other experiences recently. We should therefore mention the German Stiftungs, working and paying for democratisation elsewhere in the world.
