Jo, toda raba lah! Thank you very much! Your concern about the rise in antisemitism is appreciated, but caution & wisdom need exercising. Jewish Prof. David Graeber Has recently written about his and other Jews’ fear: https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/opendemocracyuk/first-time-my-life-im-frightened-be-jewish/ His passionate piece highlights the weaponisation of antisemitism in the Labour Party through false allegation, which could itself be classed as antisemetism. He is supported by Jewish Voice for Labour.
I first joined the Liberal Party in 1970 after 2 years in Labour and many more as an active anti- racist , nationally and in Birmingham, seeing the Labour Party enact the first (imperfect) antiracism legislation. In B’Ham we witnessed the effects of prejudice in housing and employment- also the effects of Enoch Powell’s ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech, including murder. BUT NOT A WHIFF OF JEW HATRED.
Rosh Hashanah is supposed include a time for reflection and penitence. Leviticus Ch 19 vv18 & 34 talk about loving your neighbour and the stranger in your midst. I support a number of Israeli groups, including Gush Shalom (Peace Block) which seek to bring about equality, peace & justice for all people groups, and the ending of the occupation. The last para. of the Preamble to our Constitution encapsulates every reason why we as a party should support them and the oppressed Palestinians. That is why I am deeply grieved that LDFP has been unjustly shackled by leadership and I appeal for reflection. Security & freedom from fear for Jews can only be fully achieved when all peoples are included.
