Nick Clegg and the woodland craft class

  • This looks like a good job for Nick post-retirement.

  • Horror of horrors! A politician NOT wearing a suit and tie! Is this the beginning of something? Oh, I really do hope so. And I don’t just mean the occasional collar undone, like Barak Obama and David Cameron. I’m talking about the full smart casual works.

Even in the most liberal and informal parts of the world, politicians continue to parade themselves in suits and ties. Why? Is it meant to make us feel in awe of them? Are they so terrified that they’ll lose their spell over us if they shed this ridiculous garb?

Tony Blair called it “one of the tyrannies of modern life”. Prince Claus of the Netherlands spoke about “a snake round one’s neck”. The answer is simple. Don’t do it. Join the rest of humanity and stop trying to look like a race apart.
