What our Liberal Democrat leaders are saying about the EU referendum

4 leaders and a president 1I was delighted to receive the email about the Lib Dem leaders’ European event and signed up immediately because, frankly, the EU referendum debate has been inundated with arguments that don’t always make sense and are often factually ambiguous. I am quite often irritated these days because of this.

The Lib Dems leaders,Paddy Ashdown, Ming Campbell, Nick Clegg and Tim Farron, didn’t let me down and it was excellent to see a united front on display. It felt like quite a historic moment for a young person like me.

The event took place at the BAFTA offices in Piccadilly. Each leader began with an impassioned speech explaining what staying in Europe meant to him and why we should adopt the same approach.

My favourite remark came from Tim Farron who said that those who support the leave campaign are “selfish” and should set aside their own prejudices or beliefs for the good of their children’s future and how we should avoid being, “insular, isolated, alone or irrelevant”. He said that he was not making the decision to vote in as a politician but as a “parent and a patriot”. Tim also attacked the out campaign and referred to it as “sheer dishonest elitism”. Tim’s analysis was spot on because of his emphasis on a concern for the future generations if we were to leave the EU.

I spoke to Tim afterwards and got a good account about his beliefs. He explained than any young person voting should, “consider educational opportunities, work abroad and most importantly climate change.” He sees climate change as an extremely pressing issue for future generations and that we would be “better equipped to deal with it in the EU”. He also said that staying in the EU would be a “smart outward looking statement”.

How you can help make 11 June the biggest action day of the referendum #INtogether

image001Team #INtogether wants to say a massive thank you to every single one of our activists who has hit the streets and made May a fantastic month of campaigning.

Over the course of the month, including our two action days on May 14th and May 28th, we held well over 350 street stalls, with thousands of Liberal Democrats out making the case for a strong Britain at the heart of Europe.

While the other parties have also been out campaigning, the Liberal Democrats have been out in force and we have clearly been the most visible of the parties on the streets. It couldn’t be clearer that when it comes to grassroots campaigning on Europe, it is we Lib Dems who can make the greatest contribution.

IntogetherA huge thank to all the members who came out to support out #INtogether National Day of Action on 14th May. We witnessed a superb drive by members with over 1,000 members coming out to host more than 200 streets stalls throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

The best tweets of the #INtogether Day of Action

Hundreds of enthusiastic Liberal Democrats hit the streets today for the first INtogether National Day of Action for the EU referendum campaign. From Daventry to Yate to Dunfermline to Plymouth, we flew the European flag.

The weather was very kind to us. My husband warned me to take a jacket into Edinburgh with me because it was going to turn nasty but it never did.  We held a street stall in Morningside in Edinburgh. The BBC’s Scotland editor Sarah Smith was spotted walking past it, nipping into the shops behind. Did anyone else see anyone famous as they campaigned?

Anyway, here are some of the bright and busy Lib Dems in action from across the country. You can see all of them here. Let us know what you did, and particularly the sort of things people were saying to you, in the comments.

Lib Dem MEP Catherine Bearder was in Stratford:

They either cloned her or she did a whistle-stop tour round several of the stalls in London:

The Leader himself was in Kendal

And Simon Hughes joined the team in London

Paddy was on the Yeovil stall – and he even wore the t-shirt

Who needs a battlebus?

The INtogether fever spread to the East Midlands:

That’s it. I’m going to London next time:

#Intogether’s National Day of Action to make positive case to remain in the EU

Black long with hashtag-2With the local elections behind us, the time has come to turn our full attention as a Party to the upcoming Europe Referendum which is just 6 weeks away. On 23rd June, Britain must decide what kind of country we want to be: inward-looking and cut off from the world or proudly leading from the front, at the heart of Europe.

Tonight, Tim Farron, speaking in London, will make the positive, progressive case for Britain remaining in Europe, recognising the future benefits of close relations with our neighbours and natural partners, and how investing in each other’s economies and sharing in prosperity can make Britain even greater than it is now.

This Saturday we are hosting our first National Day of Action of the #INtogether campaign and the response from local parties has been overwhelming! We have 199 street stalls planned across the country, with well over 150 local parties taking part.
