To mark the start of 2012, last week we ran a series of posts on the main challenges for the Liberal Democrats in 2012. Here in one handy recap is the full list:
The Budget
- May’s elections
- Treating supporters as active participants
- Wealth taxation
- Communicative ministers
- A coherent narrative
And don’t forget the four priorities for the party’s new Chief Executive, Tim Gordon.

I know this is off-topic but what about the immiediate challenge of The Coalitions apparent attempt to deny Scots the chance to vote for “Devomax”, the option closest to our position.
Is the BBC reporting this correctly ?
Were we consulted about this ?
Does anyone know whats going on ?
That will be ‘No’, ‘No’ and ‘No’, i would imagine. 🙁
I do wonder whether the right side of David Cameron’s brain consults the left side .
Since the Coalition believes in private provision of pubic services, surely we should be having two referenda, side by side, with the public having the choice to vote in the Tory Referendum or the ScotNat referendum or both.
Alternately, we could have street gangs fighting it out to determine which question is asked.
One of the most frustrating things I find about LDV is the blindspot towards the environment. Here we go again.
Let us also not forget that Paddy Ashdown justified the British occupation of Afghanistan on the grounds that we do not want to destabilise Pakistan, who in turn have nuclear weapons.
I was never really persuaded by that argument, but I do agree with him that nuclear proliferation is a top top top issue. But it also get ignored by LDV.
Curious isn’t that whilst we agonise over wealth taxes, George Osborne can reduce the living standards of low income people with very little debate, notable on tax credits during his last autumn statement.
I think the economy will be the main issue; will it continue to underperform the OBR predictions and undermine the attempts to reduce the budget deficit? I think what happens to the NHS will also be a top issue for 2012.
