Welcome to the 341st day of the year, folks, a day which has witnessed in past years the births of great thinkers like Noam Chomsky and Stan Boardman.

2 Must-Read Blog Posts

What are other Liberal Democrat bloggers saying? Here are two posts that have caught the eye from the Liberal Democrat Blogs aggregator:

  • Why the Conservatives have been making class an issue (James Graham)
  • … the one party still obsessed with class in this country are the Conservatives. Frankly, it would be nice if there were a bit more class consciousness within the other two main parties.

  • Four Years of Chameleon Cameron (Jonathan Fryer)
  • I don’t give a fig which school Mr Cameron went to or how posh his shadow Cabinet are. The core of the problem is that we just don’t know what chameleon Cameron really stands for.

    2 Big Stories

More than 50 papers join in front-page leader article on climate change

The Guardian has teamed up with more 50 papers worldwide to run the same front-page leader article calling for action at the climate summit in Copenhagen, which begins tomorrow.

Meanwhile Lib Dem energy and climate change spokesman Simon Hughes has revealed that at least half of the 38 ministers and officials in the department he shadows will be travelling to the Copenhagen Conference by plane. Simon, who will be travelling by train himself, says:

It’s a disgrace that ministers and officials are flying today to attend the Copenhagen Conference. They are supposed to be discussing how to save the world from a climate crisis and yet many of them are using the most polluting form of transport available – and at a very high cost to the public.

“I will be travelling to the conference by train, a method of transport far less damaging to the environment. It may take a little longer to get there, but it certainly will cost less than the people at the Department of Climate Change are spending on their travel. Labour has to wake up and realise that words are not what is needed to avert a climate crisis, it is real action that counts.”

Lib Dems urge Tessa Jowell to give details of inquiries into phone-hacking

    The Guardian reports:

The government is being asked to reveal details of cabinet minister Tessa Jowell’s involvement in investigations into the News of the World phone-hacking scandal.

Liberal Democrat MP Chris Huhne has tabled a question to Ben Bradshaw, the culture secretary, asking exactly what assistance his predecessor gave to the Metropolitan police during their investigation into phone-hacking by the newspaper’s disgraced royal editor, Clive Goodman, and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire. …

Huhne said: “Ministers should come forward if they have been told that it is likely their phones have been hacked. The News of the World has always said this was a bad apple in the newsroom, but if hacking is proved to have extended to such a senior victim, it would suggest this must have been known at the highest level of the newspaper.”
