It’s a favourite cliche of the other parties to attack Liberal Democrat campaign tactics. However, the evidence – as ever – is rather different in Ealing Southall. Ben Surtess (a name that may be familiar to some as he has written some interesting posts on PoliticalBetting.com) is a Conservative activist and over on Conservative Home has been arguing that the party must lie in its election campaign:
The two themes that must be pressed home within the first week of the campaign is that the Conservatives are the party challenging Labour … and that Lit is the “local” candidate while the LibDem candidate is not (even if they are).

Please stop this!!!!! If you want the Tories trawling through every LibDem blog and what every LibDem “activist” or “member” says up and down the country then this is thr right way to go about it. And I bet you we’ve said worse things … What is wrong with the LDV team at the moment – wrong judgement lads.

Oh dear me… a lecture on political ethics from the LibDems? Never ceases to amaze me that they can wollow in the electoral dirt and fain moral indignation (with a highly selective quote!) when faced with an aggressive campaign by another party (as happened in Hartlepool).
Nothing selective or out of context about it at all Ben. You said simply the Tories should paint the Lib Dem as not being local, even if they are (which Nigel is). No caveats or qualifications from you. Just a straight demand that the Tory campaign shouldn’t tell the truth.
Just out of interest how long standing a Southall resident IS Nigel? I notice that he “first moved to the seat” 13 years ago but this is a bothering way to express that fact if he’s been there continuously.
When did he LAST move to the seat?
