Party reform commission deadline today
Written by The Voice on 8th February 2008 – 3:27 pmA quick reminder that today is the last day for submissions to the party’s reform commission headed by Chris Bones, so please get any remaining submissions in as soon as possible.
Contributions should be emailed to and should address how the party can best meet the Leader’s aim of reaching more than 150 MPs within two general elections. Specific questions to be answered are listed on the party’s website.

Another ridiculous exercise that shows everything that’s wrong with the party. Appointed just a few weeks ago and submissions have already closed! I doubt if the vast majority of members have even heard of the Bones Commission. Meaningless ‘consultation’ like this is unworthy of us - a real ‘Cameron Lite’ moment. Pathetic.

A small point on a matter of process.
A Friday deadline assumes that those involved in putting together the various responses for the Bones Commission, whether their own personal ones or on behalf of party organisations, have nothing else to do on a Friday such as, for example, their paid work.
No, as a full time project manager I never have a headlong rush towards Friday deadlines that I am actually paid to meet (please read heavy sarcasm here)!
Friday deadlines ignore those valuable last two days of the week that can be used to undertake voluntary work such as this; can those setting deadlines please be more ‘volunteer aware’ next time and realise that most of us have to spend their weekdays earning a living, in addition to being a Lib Dem activist!

I have to admit, I often set Friday deadlines for things in the knowledge that the real deadline will be Monday effectively. That way, if anyone claims their submission is “in the post” you can give them the benefit of the doubt.
Set the deadline for Monday on the other hand, and people will try it on for Tuesday - and so on.
With that said, I’m sure the Bones Commission is completely disinterested in any submissions it receives - otherwise we would be having a consultation at Spring Conference etc. This is about Clegg making his personal stamp early, which is totally fair enough. He’d just better not cock it up.

James: “At the Spring Conference we will run a session highlighting what are emerging as the key areas for debate”, from http://www.libdems.org.uk/party/reform-commission-article.html
(Update: there’s a consultation session at spring conference on the Friday and a fringe meeting on the Saturday)
