Peers call for public to be heard on Lords reform

Today [Tuesday] Liberal Democrat Peers will be encouraging members of the public to have their say on reform of the House of Lords.

They will also ask the public to write down their views and place them in a ballot box outside Parliament during the House of Lords debate on reform of the Upper Chamber.

The Peers will also be launching their own consultation website on Tuesday, which can be found at www.lordsreformvote.org. (Lib Dem Voice editor’s note: not working yet…)

The Peers, including Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, Lord (Tom) McNally and Baroness (Joan) Walmsley, will run the ballot box before returning to the House of Lords to vote.

Commenting, Lord McNally said:

“The future makeup of the House of Lords is an incredibly important issue. It is vital that the public get to air their views on this matter.

“I hope that as many people as possible visit our new website to give their comments.

“Last week’s House of Commons vote was an historic moment, which must be built on.

“I hope that the House of Lords grasps this opportunity and votes for reform. We have been waiting nearly a hundred years to create a modern Second Chamber. I do not want to wait another century for this reform to be completed.”
