Ed Davey responds to COBRA on riots

Responding to the Prime Minister chairing COBRA following riots across the country, Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said:

The country has rightly been appalled and outraged at the despicable actions of a tiny minority. All those thugs who have rioted and carried out racist attacks must face the full force of the law.

Everyone has the right to feel safe in their homes, communities and places of worship.

We welcome the actions taken by our brave police officers and the new measures announced today by the government to clamp down on criminals attempting to terrorise our communities.

People from all backgrounds and all walks of life have come together to condemn these riots and clean up the damage. It is they who truly represent Britain, not the rioters and those who have incited them.

Good response from Ed. Starmer could have done a bit better, in my opinion, with his statement and emphasized that all violence from any section of society won’t be tolerated and that those guilty will face justice. We rightly condemn the violence and the attacks on businesses and property, and those responsible must face justice.

But we need to understand that in many towns that have suffered from deindustrialization, poor amenities, and blighted town centers, there’s been a disproportionate dispersal of asylum seekers, which has placed significant pressures on an already stretched community. It’s reached a point where social cohesion is slowly starting to break down, and those of us on the progressive left need to understand that these numbers cannot continue indefinitely—how many is too many? What we’ve seen on the continent is slowly mirroring what’s happening in our towns.
